Pactola Reservoir

This is a beautiful place to look at nature. It was the first body of water we came across since coming here. There are a couple of islands we saw. I did not notice animals, but I am sure they take solace in this resevoir. One island caught my eye as it had an American flag on it. We came at sunset and it was a very peaceful place.

It's a wonderful stop. Bring a swimsuit and towel. Water is clean and clear. There are stops all around it and below the dams too. Check it out.

Rating the roadside pull off area because that was my only experience with the Reservoir. Pulled in to take photos .. my rating is based on the horrible roads to get there, the lack of room in the parking area for large vehicles and the overpriced Camping options in the area. As far as a place to take photos goes this pull off area was fine.

Omg, this is one of the most beautiful spots on earth! We found it while driving from Deadwood, SD to Mount Rushmore. Stopped to take a few minutes to enjoy the stunning views. I'd love to spend more time here. They had plenty of parking and bathrooms (however they're kinda primitive, bring your own toilet paper!). Great place for a hike by the water or a picnic.

Pactola Lake is the largest and deepest reservoir in the Black Hills at approximately 800 surface acres, located 15 miles west of Rapid City South Dakota. A visitor center is located on the south side of the dam, and facilities include campgrounds, hiking trails, picnic areas, cliffs, boat ramps, and a beach. This is an anglers paradise year round with trophy class fishing for Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Lake Trout, Northern Pike, Bass, and panfish. Whether you want to spend a day or a week, Pactola has things for everyone to do.

Beautiful views, had a great trail to hike around. Loved the rocks and Toby our dog cooled down with a quick swim.
