Mission San Juan

Mission San Juan Capistrano is a beautiful and peaceful place to visit in San Antonio. The historic church and grounds are very well preserved, and you can truly feel the history and faith that have been part of this mission for centuries. The architecture, stonework, and altar are stunning, and the atmosphere is calm and reflective. It’s a great stop whether you’re interested in Texas history, photography, or quiet prayer. The grounds are clean, easy to walk, and not as crowded as some other spots, which makes it even more enjoyable. Definitely a hidden gem along the Mission Trail and worth the visit. Highly recommend!

During our visit, the second stop included Mission San Juan. A park ranger was available to share with us the methods the natives used to channel water from the San Antonio river. They created a sophisticated system of Spanish-built irrigation ditches called acequias, using gravity to bring river water to irrigate mission fields for crops like corn, beans, and squash, a practice that continues today with the restored San Juan Acequia for the mission's demonstration farm. This system, part of a larger network that served multiple missions, included dams and the unique Espada Aqueduct, allowing for sustainable agriculture in the region for centuries.

Don’t miss the walking trail that hugs the San Antonio river. It’s a birders mini paradise. We saw an orange crowned warbler, Carolina wren, blue jay, ruby crowned kinglet, lesser goldfinch and house finch. So bring your cameras and binoculars. Stop at the gift shop with Ms. Becky and Ms. Ruby. They have unique gifts brought in from Mexico City. Chat with a friendly park ranger for historical context. And don’t miss the native plants field. Something is always blooming.

Beautiful location that stood out from the other Missions that we had visited. It was a very large area to explore with lots of information on what life looked like here.

It is a complete historical site, and the church is still available. If you are interested in history and architecture, this is a good place.

We continue visiting the missions. Established in 1731, Mission San Juan was primarily a farming mission. Its residents cultivated crops such as corn, beans, and wheat, and raised livestock to support the community and nearby missions. The mission’s adobe church, although simple in design, was a hub of religious and cultural life. San Juan also became a vital center for irrigation and water management, with a network of acequias (irrigation ditches) built to sustain its fields—a system still partially in use today. #abuelosmochileros_texas #abuelosmochileros_sanantonio
