Monitor-Merrimac Overlook Park (Fishing Pier)

After experiencing the Monitor exhibits at the Mariners' Museum, we were keen to go to the Overlook. Of course, mostly it's looking out over the water so it's not all that exciting, it's more about being there. There are informational plaques which you can read and then look up and try to imagine the scene. There is also a pier used by the local fisherman. There were several guys sitting on the deck. They had fishing poles but they were talking more than fishing. Maybe i shouldn't have been intimidated but i was, and we did not try to walk out there. We got what we had come for.

If you are a person who loves sitting by water, this is the place for you. Now, the pier is nothing fancy at all but whether you play your favorite playlist, or sit in silence while looking at the distant gleaming lights of cars on the MM, this spot is heavenly. Well, in my opinion, anywhere near water is quite heavenly🤭 Check it out and you also just may conclude that this spot is definitely a piece of heaven on earth.

Usually good fishing off the pier but recently this summer it’s been closed every time I’ve gone clean Porta potty usually the occasional drunk underneath the picnic shelters but they’re harmless. I’ve seen many different ones and none of them are giving me a problem day or night usually they’re fishing with my golden doodle off the little beach lots of lots of grass though in the water

I have fished here all my life but only just recently decided to shoot some shots with my Mavic 2 Pro drone. It's a perspective you normally don't see. Enjoy!

This 4th of July we intended to enjoy Buckroe Beach and we got there early to get an great spot to put up or tent. Little did we know that you can no longer put tents up there. So I suggested the pier on 16th St, and it was the best day ever. The grandkids were saying how much fun they were having swimming and fishing, grilling and playing with other kids from an family reunion that was going on across the street at Peterson boat basin.

There's a nice little stretch of beach here and a fishing pier. It's a scenic little park, and interestingly, it's like a remote extension of the Mariner's Museum in central Newport News. I was pleasantly surprised to see the posters with information about Civil War marine battles. I like it.
