New Haven Yacht Club

NHYC is a good, affordable, down to earth sailing club. The club members do their own work here to keep costs down. Keelboats and small or medium centerboard sailboats are welcome here. Dry sailing is possible as well.

They quickly run out of mooring buoys during the season, but their launch service doesn't mind taking you to and from the nearby anchorage. Their clubhouse is very spartan, but you find there a shower, a restroom, a dumpster and a place to chill out. Short walk to the grocery store and other facilities. People there are friendly, launch service is quick, what else to wish for?

We anchored out past the yacht club for a while and they offered water taxi service to us anytime we needed it. One time we didn't ask and instead decided to give them a break and row in. About halfway in they motored past and asked us if we wanted a tow the rest of the way! They also let us use the showers and restrooms on multiple occasions. I was thoroughly impressed with their hospitality. My only regret is that we didn't have the chance to pick up a mooring and stay with them long-term. A hidden gem, for sure.

NHYC is a small club that provides an excellent family, racing, or cruising experience. There's nothing better than being in a protected Cove with immediate access to the harbor and beyond. Adds an hour of potential real sailing time to every time we're out on our old Cal 25! No long motor down a river or channel. And amazing sunsets? Definitely. The club faces west, for beautiful natural displays after a day on the water. Great mix of folks and boats, from drysailing race oriented to families and couples on older or newer cruising boats, to salty, vintage flavored gaff rigged classics with tanbark sails or modern multihulls. Great sense of community and cooperation. The race culture is lively, but also mellow and positive. Club facilities on the grounds have everything you need for sailing and socializing, and nothing you don't. Indoor hall, waterside pavilion, indoor lockers in storage building, crane, competent launch operators, kitchen, loo, and shower. Dues and mooring fees are therefore very reasonable. This is what sailing can be all about at its best. Joining has been one of the very best things we've done as a family.

Best sailing club in the area. Sail on and off the mooring. No need to motor. Just raise sails and cast off. I love it!
