I was really hopeful, but this place just fails on so many levels (likely not complying with NYC code requirements). In fact just Horrible. no hot water, not clean, shared small bathroom and shower that were not always supplied... shared fridge if you dare. had debate over hot water availability and how to take cold showers. are you serious? yes I am. just dont go.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I visited this guesthouse for the first time 8 years ago and I keep going back because I have so many great memories. It just keeps getting better all the time. It is in a perfect location to use as a jumping board to go anywhere you want in New York. High Line is a short walk away. The room was very quiet, old-style and comfortable. One of the best gay guesthouses I have stayed at. I love it, and the owners are friendly and wonderful.
Loved this place. I felt like I was staying in a haunted mansion from Scooby Doo. If you're looking for luxe accomodations Chelsea Mews is not it. But at this price, at this location, with this sort of vibe? I loved it. I'm already planning to stay here again. Anyone leaving a bad review for this place and Gary really doesnt know how to enjoy life.
I don’t care what all you dopes say about this place because it doesn’t matter! Garry is one of the nicest guys in town! He is kind, knowledgeable, goes above and beyond for his guests! My friend and I have had many wonderful experiences here at the inn, and Garry makes the stays that much more enjoyable! Plus that huge claw foot soaking tub 🛀 is amazing! This place is unique, interesting, comfortable and ya get to walk around naked! I highly recommend staying here! Thanks again for another great time Garry! Can’t wait till we see you again! xoxo Bart-
I enjoyed staying at Chelsea Mews. It was convenient to the subway. The water pressure in the shower was nice. I was out and about so I didn't spend much time in the room. I stayed in the military room, the one with military pictures and decorations. I enjoyed being in the inside of a NY townhouse. It was quiet and had a good night's sleep. The shower had good water pressure. There was a small fridge and a pod coffee maker, neither of which I used. The Wifi worked just fine. Some of the other reviews were harsh but their expectation were different.
Recent visitor..tried calling two days prior to verify my reservation and got nothing but a full mailbox..almost booked another but had the numbers ready just in case the place was closed...rang bell and finally the door opened. Not answering phone? Not good for biz. The toilet seat was broken on the shared bathroom, probably $25 for a great one at Lowes...ditto with the need for shower mats inside and outside the tiny shower stall as inside the drain has a sharp piece that you could cut your foot and outside it gets slippery. Coffee pod cups and a machine that looks like it was never cleaned...and no cups, no sugar, no non dairy creamer...why even have it. Saw two rooms whose shades fell off the rollers, tricky for a place that advertises nudity and AC are loud and difficult to operate. The sheets lacked that just washed smell and the blanket was very scary. Boys..you are in the hospitality business and I guess you will keep getting people in, but you should spend the FUNDS from a ONE night stay and fix the above...the dollar store sells tile and fungus cleaner for...a $1...wanted to buy but made the shower a quick one. Figure you could pay someone to do the services needed to upgrade your reviews.
I am a big fan of clothing optional establishments and have stayed in a variety of gay clothing optional resorts and inns throughout the country. Incredibly, in the most exciting city in the world, there seems to be only one option for the clothing averse male -- the Chelsea Mews Guest House.||||The reviews here are so mixed, I was hesitant to give this place a try. But my curiosity got the better of me -- I live in NYC, and thought I'd treat my self to a 'staycation'. Despite my mediocre rating, I am glad I did. I doubt you will ever have a more unique experience than staying at Chelsea Mews. ||||First, the good -- the location is unbeatable -- in the heart of Chelsea, it is the perfect location for the gay traveler -- walking distance to every bar and restaurant that makes up the heart of gay NYC. And of course, as far as I know, this is the only clothing optional lodging in the city.||||But here's where things get a bit strange. When I first stepped into the house, the smell of 'old' is overwhelming. The decor is busy and eclectic, as if frozen in time from a previous century. It's not that its particularly dirty, but it needs a thorough dusting and deep cleaning. There isn't much air flow and the house has a stuffy stale smell. And no offense to the proprietors, but frankly, the gentleman who greeted me at the door, also had a similar smell about him.||||I booked one of their single rooms, which is a narrow room with a single bed and a shared bathroom with two other rooms. Although it's not really a bathroom, but rather a separate shower, a separate room with a toilet, and a sink in the hallway. These rooms are up 2 1/2 flights of stairs.||||The room itself had a similar smell about it. Enough so that I went to the local convenience store and got myself some Febreze. This helped considerably.||||The bed itself was comfortable, although the single pillow provided was woefully thin. The sheets and bedspread had also seen better days. They do have wi-fi but it is spotty and inconsistent. And while the room has an a/c unit, it is very loud.||||The room is so small that I generally left it open when I was there -- which led to getting to know my neighbors -- some intimately. All the guests there were naked. And I found the proprietors to be unobtrusive -- I rarely saw them after I checked in.||||Overall, if want to spend some time in NYC in the buff, Chelsea Mews is something to consider -- just bring a sense of humor...and some Febreze.
