Leon's Backroom Bar

📍 Gay bars in Baltimore

7.9

Leon’s Backroom Bar stands out as a cozy, unpretentious gay-friendly dive where the energy is warm and welcoming. The happy hour specials are generous, and the staff—particularly the attentive Latino bartender—deliver a smooth, engaging experience, though occasional inconsistencies in service could use refinement. With a crowd leaning toward mature, inclusive patrons, it’s a spot where regulars feel at home, and newcomers are embraced.

Entertainment like karaoke and themed events (including drag shows and trivia) adds flair, though the lack of on-site food may prompt nearby detours. The bar’s laid-back charm and skilled mixologists make it a standout, balancing authentic local appeal with a touch of Baltimore’s eclectic nightlife spirit.

This bar is a dive in the best sense of the word. I’m not a drinker but depending on the bartender you may walk out needing an uber after a double (their happy hour special). But they don’t judge you if you order a coke (just tip them as if it’s a drink)! I came here to meet friends after being out of the scene for about 15 years and made more friends. It feels very much like a small town gay bar. Mostly cis men who like men, but I appreciate the gender diversity that I do see. I would say mostly above 30 year olds there.

Love the Bar for the most part, I feel like the barback doesn’t know his place where he goes behind the bar gets drinks and gives people he knows drinks so I feel as though that is unprofessional. Karaoke is so much fun, if they had food that’ll be even better. All in all I think they need to get the staff under control that’s a good way to lose money and customers.

I.....guess.....I waited a long time for anyone to even acknowledge my existence. I guess if you are a regular the one with the beard will run right up to you and take your order and if they dont know you they just kinda do whatever. The Latino gentleman is the only one with some sense on how to handle a crowd. There used to be an appeal for hitting gay bars whenever youre in a city. Now youre better off just drinking in your hotel room.

Steampunk Alley isn't that steampunk, nor is it in an alley. What it lacks in naming accuracy it makes up for in character. The food is good, the bartenders are are some of the best around, happy hour is every day from 4pm to 10pm, and there are events several nights a week, from viewings of American Horror Story to RuPaul's Drag Race trivia with a full drag show before and after, and Sunday night karaoke is always a blast. Not sure whether Steampunk is Baltimore's best gay bar, Baltimore's best dive bar, or both.

Me and my wife had a great time no food anymore but we went next door to get a big greasy cheese steak (I'm the greasy strangler lol)
