Amory Place

I stayed at The Amory Guest House in October 2016 and I was amazed by how clean everything was. The beds are really comfortable too I believe they have memory foam mattresses. The location is perfect just a few blocks from the subway Central Square a few minutes from Boston and right between Harvard and MIT.||They have lots of bathrooms and they are very clean. They also offer free breakfast and their kitchen is available for the guests to use. I was really happy to be able to play the piano from the living room. I totally recommend it and I surely will come back.

Our room was on the first floor and had no screen on the window. The room was hot and stuffy and we couldn't leave the window open as it had no screen and was right on the sidewalk. When I opened the front door to get some air, we received a chastising telephone call. Apparently, the invisible staff monitored the camera; they were never seen in person.||||As elders, the bathroom on our floor was important. But there was no shower or tub. The half bath did not appear to have been cleaned during our four day stay.||||Two lights were burnt out in our room and two of the three lights in the TV room were broken.||||The kitchen was dirty. The frig and stove especially so. Neither||Were cleaned during our stay. The dishes were few and shabby. The breakfast food was eggs, white bread and really bad coffee. Fruit appeared, and quickly disappeared, twice during our four day stay.||||It's a shame because it appears someone made a good effort to paint, decorate and furnish the house. It's the maintenance and cleaning that haven't been provided.||||Despite it's relatively inexpensive price, I would not stay there again.

I stayed in the Amory Guest House in Nov 2017. Positive: the bed was really nice, and the location was (for me) just perfect, right in between MIT and Harvard. However, I find it heavily overpriced for what you get: it really is just a bed, as it has ahead bathrooms, and there is no staff available. It turned out I could not close the door of my room (literally, not that the door didn't lock, it didn't even close, unless someone would push it from the other side, i.e. the hallway) and despite frequent communication with the owner, there was clearly no sense of urgency to actually fix it. And indeed, it didn't get fixed and communication was unsatisfactory to say the least.

We loved the beautiful home, hard-wood floors and natural-light-filled rooms. Very quiet street, but great location within walking distance of Cambridge, Somerville, grocery stores and lots of restaurants. Nice park across street for young children. Beautiful dining room and kitchen available to all guests. Clean bathrooms (powder-room/toilet in bedroom, but bathroom with shower shared per floor), well air-conditioned, owners were very responsive by text. Excellent wifi connection throughout property and living room has TV with Netflix and cable. Owners provide eggs, wheat bread and spices for guests to prepare breakfast on their own. ||Our only complaint was the use of "plug-in" air fresheners, which make it very difficult to breathe for folks with respiratory problems/allergies/asthma. No air fresheners are needed!

Be aware that you share a bathroom with others on your floor, that you will never see the proprietors, and that it is difficult to tell which breakfast items in the frige are for all and which are put there by other guests. Beds are not made up each day, towels are not changed, toilet paper supplies can be neglected and the place looks like someone started to paint your room and then got tired and went home. Doubt if we will ever stay here again, but I have to say that I slept well. The room was so chilly and the comforter so snuggly, that it was the best sleep I had in ages. The only thing going for the Amory Guest House is that it is comparatively less expensive than other Cambridge accommodations. But it is still pricy.

A little pricey perhaps, and the shower wasnt getting hot water (but tough). But I slept well, the place was clean and comfortable, and that was what was important. Lugging a heavy suitcase up two flights of narrow, steep stairs was fun (not) but still, would possibly stay again should the opportunity arise.

Amory guest house (GH) can be best described as an expensive dormitory. The location is good, being about 12 mins walk from Central square of Cambridge, hence close to restaurants, shopping, T-metro, buses, etc. The steps up the GH at the entrance is uneven height, so watch out. It is a self check in place with minimal convenience. The entry is strictly at 2 pm and exit at 12 noon. There are 8 double rooms with a 6'x5' bed in each room of about 11'x10' size. The room has a noisy window A/C unit. There are only 2 baths for all these rooms together and one half bath thrown in the ground floor. That is the most inconvenient thing about this GH. Since the bath/rest rooms are outside, they offer no privacy and in the middle of the night offers no security either. The kitchen is clean and there is a dining room and a lounge, which are also clean. The downside is that there is precious little to eat in the fridge (self-service) for breakfast except a gallon of milk, white bread and eggs. I consider it expensive for paying almost 175 $ a night! So, take it if you have no other choices.
