Cavalier Wildlife Management Area

Overall I really enjoy this land and am thankful to have it open for public use. There is a variety of terrain from open fields, planted pines and thick, gnarly pucker brush. The property is accessible by a series of dirt roads that are usually open during hunting seasons. Now for the not so good, this property is heavily hunted and hunting with dogs is allowed. I have hunted here several seasons with no success. I stopped going because there are so many hunters on the property and there is a lot of traffic along the dirt roads of people cruising around hoping to catch critters on the move.

Figured I’d take my chance hunting public land here in Virginia. While it is a beautiful place with signs of whitetail deer activity, Thts all I’ve seen. Haven’t seen one deer driving in, while hunting and scouting, neither while leave. For a Management area you’d think there’s more action but it’s not.

Nice if you have no where else to go. Youre not going to escape civilization out there. Some trash, over hunted if you plan on hunting. Almost nothing out there anymore. Oh and ticks are definitely a problem right now. If you want a nice small walk in the woods, its not a bad place. Caught rocky mountain fever from a tick there a year ago, so be careful out there.

The trails are great for walking, running etc. They are either gravel or hard packed dirt. There are no restroom facilities or access to potable water. Also definitely recommend tick spray.

The wildlife is evident everywhere. Easy access even for the disabled. Well maintained access roads. Not that many mosquitoes, which is always a plus.

Nothing but drunks and druggies at all hours through here. Don't bother paying for a pass to camp here the local forest rangers will come out and tell you to leave and leave a snake in your campsite before threating you and intimidating you with making sure you know they have guns and you have no right even though you are legally camping. Worst managed wild life area in the area. Broken glass and beer cans and plastic and bullet casings all throughout the whole park not a single area is without garbage of some kind. Do not pick up the garbage or the forest ranger will try to ticket you for having a trash bag with trash in the WMA. Do not recommend

Road "D" has a canal down both sides. Very few places to cross. The area is swampy as well.
