A great frame shop with tons of choices and competitive prices. Vonna the owner is great and knows all there is to know about framing, so you can trust her suggestions. The rest of the staff is friendly and helpful. They even work closely with an art restorer who picks up pieces from them weekly, in case you need something cleaned or repaired. The only place I trust to take my artwork! For covid, they are appointment only and ask you wear a mask and gloves (provided at their sanitation station when you walk in.)
My expectations were exceeded. The shadowbox came out more stunning than I could imagine. Looking at the piece head on the with museum glass it looks like the glass is invisible. Only reason for the 4 stars is the piece took twice as long as promised. 4 weeks turned into 9. I would definitely go back to Dark horse for more framing projects.
My go-to choice for framing anything in an unconventional size or of special significance/rarity. Tons of options, constant and personalized assistance from the owner and employees, and always, always great results. You never feel rushed either like you might in a Michael's - it's a quiet and relaxed atmosphere. Included are a couple examples of their work to illustrate:
This is my first time adding a frame to a painting. The staff at Dark Horse offered a lot of help and let me try a lot of frame samples. The final work is so beautiful. I am very happy with the service and the quality of the work.
We have had 3 large canvas paintings stretched and framed over the last year or so at Dark Horse Framing. They have a huge selection of frames to choose from and offer great expertise and advice on how to properly stretch our canvases. Their pricing is the most competitive we have seen in the area, without any compromise on quality or service. In fact, the last framing project was completed in only one week, a full week before it was originally estimated. Because of the size of our last painting, the owner actually delivered it to our home as a courtesy. This is the only store we will do any framing at in the future.
I have been having Vonna Long ( the proprietor) do all my framing for the past 25 years at least. Sometimes I have no clue what I want and she ends up with a framing solution I love. Other times I have a very good idea, but she always improves on it. In all these years and well over 25 frames, there has only been one instance where a change was made. I forgot to specify the type of glass, and she changed the glass to what I wanted and only charged the difference in the glass price as what I wanted was more expensive. I hope everyone will support her new enterprise. I just picked up my first two paintings from Dark Horse and am totally happy.
I have been to this store twice and got great service both times! The first time I went to this frame store with my mother-in-law to find frames for my key ring collection. They didn't have any for us and were very helpful in directing us to other stores that might carry what we were looking for. The second time, I needed a custom frame for a picture that my husband had been saving to be framed at some point. It was a non-standard size and harder for a DIY project. After many years of having been stored, the corners of the picture were wrinkled. I was starting to wonder if it was even worth framing it. None of the frame stores I went to carried frame for this odd-size picture. I then remembered the friendly staff at Dark Horse Framing and decided to take it to them. Dark Horse Framing picked a great frame for me and delivered it really fast. I found out that unlike other frame stores, they have a lot of framing equipment on their premises which helps in the fast turnaround. And the wrinkles are miraculously not visible anymore!! Couldn't be happier. They are on El Camino right off of 92 in San Mateo. Parking on the road seemed to be a problem until I found that there is a small parking lot just before the store where I could have parked.
