Granville Anvil

📍 Gay bars in Chicago

5.8

This establishment offers a diverse selection of craft cocktails, particularly strong drinks that cater to those with a taste for bold flavors. The ambiance shifts noticeably depending on the day—some evenings feature festive decor and lively conversations, while quieter moments allow for more intimate interactions. Service quality varies, with moments of exceptional hospitality and attentive bartenders, though occasional lapses in professionalism may detract from the experience.

Located conveniently near public transit, it serves as a hidden gem for patrons seeking a relaxed yet engaging atmosphere. While the bar excels in creativity and value—often delivering high-quality drinks at competitive prices—visitors should expect an experience that balances charm with inconsistency. Ideal for those who appreciate a mix of social energy and refined libations.

Service was abysmal. Upon walk-in was asked "what do you want". When I asked for a beer list the bartender pretty much screamed "I have no list just tell me what you want". A few more other things too, but he was the most hostile person in customer service I’ve ever met. We left and refused to give the establishment a dime. Service 0/10. This was a Sunday at noon before a mosaic class trying to get a quick beer

Decided not to be a sad sack alone by myself on Christmas Eve and made my second visit here last night. My first time back in November was perfectly nice, very quiet, good drinks, just a few groups chatting idly. But last night the place was decked out to the nines in all manner of fabulous Christmas decor—including Brandon the bartender in a reindeer onesie—and packed with an array of patrons bringing some really great energy. The 3 gin and tonics and mystery peppermint shot Brandon made me were not only excellent, but lasted me well until 4 am, all for a fraction of what it would have cost at other bars. Really was just a lovely few hours I spent here, especially the conversation. It's very refreshing to go to a bar where you can actually hear people and make real connections rather than shouting at each other. Altogether a great little spot, truly a hidden gem to have just a train stop away, and I will definitely be back!

Stopped in on a Monday night. Some of the strongest drinks I’ve had in a while. If you’re into that, this could be the place for you! They’ve got a great back patio area and had great prices too. It was fun to watch Monsters Inc while enjoying being on the back patio. Another patron stopped and complimented me on my jacket, which was nice. It seemed like everyone was really nice making for a fun atmosphere.

Talk about a complete different experience depending on the bartender. Going in the mornings the bartender is off-putting to the point if you're enjoying a drink by yourself and he considers you have already spent too much time there he will tell you "you can't park here" even if you're still working through it. During the evenings the regular bartender is welcoming and friendly. Something to keep in mind when visiting.

Great little dive bar. It's cash only, but that being said, great relaxed atmosphere. It's easy to sit and mind your business, or engage in good conversations. The bartenders are friendly and fun to talk too, as well as the rest of the patrons.

A great little gay dive bar. Good prices on drinks and great bartenders. My only complaint is the music. I feel like on Saturday nights someone hijacks the jukebox, and we are stuck listening to the same music over and over again. Also one suggestion, you have all these televisions. Play something fun on there other than the news or sports.

The best Chicago gay bars are far away from Boystown. This is one of the best. Friendly, diverse crowd of regulars. Bartenders are friendly. It's a good place to have an intimate tete a tete with a dear friend or a casual chat with a stranger. Well decorated for Halloween .
