This bird sanctuary has been on our radar for a long time and when we heard that 2 migrating Snowy Owls were hanging out,we had to make a visit. This Sanctuary is located in the Lincoln Park area of Chicago and is one of the top spots in Illinois for migratory birds. Over 15 acres ,there is a paved path that loops through the natural prairie and woodlands. There is parking at the main entrance of Montrose Harbor. Some of the street parking is free or you pay a small fee. No entrance fee tho for the bird sanctuary. If you walk out onto the concrete breaker, you will see many different bird species as well as a great view of Chicago. And yes,we did see the Snowy Owls..a "Lifer" bird for us any many other bird enthusiasts. Can't wait to go back in the spring to hopefully see the Piping Plovers!
good birds. lovely area to meet fellow bird enthusiasts. fantastic views of the lake and downtown. great paths for those with strollers or wheelchairs along with some side branches for those looking for more quiet.
A hidden gem of natural prairie along the lakeshore. From vibrant bee balm and other native plants to buzzing bees and fluttering monarchs, this spot is alive with wildlife. It also serves as a seasonal home for piping plovers and a variety of native and migratory bird species. While birding experts will feel right at home, even beginners can explore with the help of the Merlin app. Scenic views all around, with convenient paid street parking available.
There's a reason this is the top place to see some birds in the state! With a mix of forest and protected dunes this place is an oasis for local and migrating birds. Parking can be a little difficult during the busy season, but still worth a visit!
Good place for bird watching in the spring. Not so much in the winter, but good views of downtown.
What a truly wonderful hidden jam in Chicago. Lovely beach, a place to eat, called the dock and a bird sanctuary. We walked through the woods and so many birds, bunnies, and squirrels. The real showstopper is out on the pier where you can see the piping clover pair, and their three cute little fuzzy chicks There was also a leurkestic swallow, which I’ve never seen before yesterday. It’s beautiful sand beach and if you keep going, there’s a beautiful paved trail and fantastic views of the city.
Beautiful place to see birds and other animals of all kinds. We saw lots of red wing blackbirds, robins, chipmunks, grackles, and even a sleeping bat. The views of the city skyline were also beautiful.
