We visited in feb on our way to lane bay chickee. Very cool spot. It's pretty slow going through tight mangrove along the trail until you reach this point.
We stayed one night after Lane Bay. It has some open spots were you can choose to camp. It's a big site so it could fit 3 tents but we stayed overnight by ourselves. There's birds in the morning. Very nice and good for resting.
A good spacious site nestled in the woods. Lots of bugs so be ready. Also be aware that there are mice and critters so keep food contained.
Great place to stay on an overnight trip from Hells Bay Trail. It is a ground site. Lots of mosquitoes so prepare. It was on the trail from Hells Bay Trial-head to Lard Can that I saw my first python in the everglades.
We stopped here for a break on the hells bay trail and if this was where we were staying I think I may have gone home. The entire site was deep mud, and there really wasn't any major rain recently. The everglades is a land of water, I would definitely suggest staying in one of the chickee sites instead.
A few fresh pics from Dec 2017
In december of 2024: we canoed 3 miles out of Hells Bay at the Everglades National Park to the Lard Can camping site. there wasn’t much information online about this particular spot, most information was about the Chickees. (which we want to try next) however this spot peeked our interest for being ground level with the Everglades elements. we started the trail at Hells Bay around 10:30am and got to the site around 1:15pm. we set up our tent then went back on the water to fish. you’ll notice a lot of movement from the fish on your way there. we went back and had dinner.(backpacking meals since you can’t light fires at Lard Can) while we ate we noticed fish swimming around the dock so we put our lines back in. that’s when the monsters came out. huge silver fish so strong our lines couldn’t hook them. definitely bring saltwater rods here. it was 80 degrees that day but got pretty chilly at night. we heard lots of birds and probably some raccoons but nothing approached the tent. i cant express this enough: bug spray and bug nets for your face, especially at night. we left around 7:30am the next day and saw an alligator on our way out. he was big but the only one we saw the whole time. the way back seemed more challenging and tighter. but with the adrenaline from the alligator and desperate craving for chicken tenders, we got back to the dock at 9:48am. overall we would definitely do this again. this spot shows you the rawness of the Everglades and reminds you how crazy our world is, and how much there is to explore.
