This was our second visit for primitive camping, and we enjoyed it as much as the first time. We will always recommend it! Kudos to DNR & the staff taking care of business after that severe storm on Wednesday too...you guys did great making sure the roads got cleared & everyone was taken care of❤️
Sites are pretty close to the road and can be pretty busy unless you're on the loop. Otherwise, decently clean and well maintained for such a popular state park.
It was an amazing adventure ! So much to do and see! Trails for walking, hiking, biking, and horsing! There's a pool to relax by. A hay ride for only 5 dollars. A wonderful nature center . The famous Abe Martin lodge w restaurant, and public can eat there. Cabins to rent. Ogle lake offers fishing, and I believe you can us boats w trolling motors, and row boats, and kayaks. They offer all year camping. There is a general store for campers needs. Clean bathrooms w showers! Worth the trip, see y'all thar!
Being prepared helps enhance the experience. We had a wonderful stay and were impressed by the state of the bathrooms. Beware that there are in fact raccoons on the ridge, and that this is one of the highest points of the park, making it vulnerable to high winds during storms. Be smart and safe and enjoy your time here. We would definitely return if we have the opportunity.
I used to camp and hike here many years ago all though I didn't remember the modern restrooms there. Nice surprise anyway. Very popular destination and would return. Watch for wildlife when driving through this park. It was abundant.
I would score as 3.5/5 if I could. The camp store was well stocked and convenient to get firewood. There was a convenient vault toilet and a bathhouse with clean toilets and showers readily available by walking 3-4 minutes, which we solely used. The area is pretty and most of the sites have shade. The sites along the perimeter weren’t level and were not uniform in size (some sites were tiny), which is why I’m taking away stars. Everyone was respectful of quiet hours and it was a peaceful stay. It would be great if they are at least able to level out the sites in the off season. I can imagine some people were rolling down the hill in their tents in some of the sites. Overall, we enjoyed our stay, but we would use Taylor Ridge next time we visit.
Racccoon Ridge Campgroud has mostly basic sites. Ours had electric but only 20 amps that needed an extension cord to be able to reach the box. Dump station did not have fresh water available. All sites need more gravel and releveled for campers. Power went out for entire campground on our first day. It was finally restored about 12 hours later. Otherwise, beautiful park in the fall.
