The Lowell Davies Festival Theatre, located in Balboa Park, San Diego, is a prominent cultural venue that has been at the heart of the San Diego theater scene since its opening in 1949. Named after the philanthropist and local businessman Lowell Davies, the theater serves as the primary outdoor venue for the renowned Old Globe Theatre, one of the most celebrated regional theaters in the United States. The theater's design is a beautiful blend of modern and traditional architecture, with a grand, open-air setting that allows for an immersive experience in the heart of Balboa Park. The Lowell Davies Festival Theatre hosts a wide range of performances, from classic plays to contemporary works and new productions, often taking advantage of its stunning outdoor setting. The theater is especially popular during San Diego's warm months, offering a unique opportunity to enjoy high-quality theater under the stars. With its intimate atmosphere, exceptional acoustics, and beautiful surroundings, the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre is a beloved destination for both locals and visitors, making it a key cultural venue in San Diego's vibrant arts scene.
A wonderful outdoor experience. There is no bad seat in the house! One of the nicest outdoor theaters I've been to. Great sound, lights, and production overall. Never been disappointed by any thing being performed here. Seats are "stadium seating" so bring a cushion and if you'll be there in the evening bring a blanket. Feast your eyes on whatever you may behold and enjoy!
The Quality of the production at the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre always blows me away. My husband and I went to see The Tempest. They always have unique interpretations of classics and their sets are beautiful.
Went to see Lance Bush perform at the Old Glove Theatre! It was a great time and location. The outdoor setting was an intriguing sight!
I always enjoy this venue. I have seen several plays here now and every seat has a good view. I also enjoy the fresh air, being at an open-air theater, though depending on the time of year, you will want a good jacket or a blanket.
I love this venue. The productions are consistently excellent and the atmosphere is casual. The chairs are stadium chairs, so some folks bring cushions. Also, it can get cool, so check the forecast and bring a blanket or wear appropriate clothing.
Been going to Old Globe productions for 50 years through all its physical changes. We enjoy both the indoor and outdoor venues. It is one of our summer outings. We even drive over a 200 miles round trip for a show. Also not to be missed is dining at the Prado before the show.
