Pioneer Park has a rating of 4.6 out of 5 based on over 928 reviews on Google
Nice park, very clean, very spooky at night. The owls played their parts real well during the tour. If you want to unknowingly walk over a thousand bodies its fantastic.
I love this park. expansive green space, good playgrounds for kids, an interesting if slightly eerie graveyard in the corner. Come set up with a chair and enjoy the sun, read a book.
Beautiful park that I visited for the very first time, but discovered the park has a very creepy secret given that it was a cemetery, and they just moved the headstones but not the bodies. This fact adds a bit of serenity to the area given its the resting place for a lot of people. So, it's just something to keep in mind if you're planning on going here, depending on what your comfort level is with that side of the park's history.
I'm giving 5 stars mostly because I LOVE the huge magnolia tree!! I also love the mesquite trees because they remind me of home (Texas). I guess the trees just remind me of the south and I miss it a little. I was also very interested in the history there and seeing the gravestones, although its a little sad that the bodies were never moved and the park where kids are playing and people are walking around hanging out is still a graveyard with bodies (apparently only some of the headstones were moved to one side section). If you can get past that, its a good (small) park to bring the kids and/or dog, or just chill. There's a playground on one side thats kind of separated from the actual park area by the restrooms. Definitely a cool spot for people who like large, old trees or people wanting to see or feel a presence at night (so I've heard). I just wish the parents would keep their kids off the headstones!! Pretty disrespectful!
Best fact. Park built over a old cemetary. There are dozens or tombstones toward the back. I guess there was a old school there and the faculty was put to rest there . Very pretty and slightly spoky. Behind the tombstones there is a small open area hidden from sight . High school kids would frequent this area at night to drink and well.... you remember hopefully . This spot has fast access to Washington st going down the hill for quick getaway if cops come for you. Just dont be to loud especially in the summer two houses are ear shot distance .. Scenic park with playground, exercise equipment and paved sidewalk. There are some benches. Plenty of open grass .. My only complaint is the homeless camp out in the day time and bathrooms are not up to Okay standards. Likely only cleaned once a day. But hey at least they open. !! If the closed go pee in the hidden area behind tombstones
Walking around the park gave me an Erie feeling, knowing there are bodies buried from the 1900s underneath the area.
I have been searching for a grave site of an ancestor and was disappointed to not find his name on the plaques here. After reading some of the history of Pioneer Park and learning that everything was removed, then the little memorial was put in and some of the headstones retrieved. Hopefully these pictures will help others know if their relatives are buried here.
