I had a great time at the saunas which I’ve been to for 20+ years. This time was different, I took a shower at the end and there was a 3inch American cockroach on top of me while showering and when I told the front desk ladies only one of them seemed conerned. There should be some more action and accountability when you want to get clean.. there shouldn’t be cockroaches on top of you. I was there for my mother’s birthday and it really made us feel like we shouldn’t go back, the response was awful. They told me that the cockroach should have left by this point and what was I doing by asking about it. It was still there and they should have cleaned out the room because this is probably happening in the kitchen as well. I get that it’s nyc and cockroaches are common but do we want them on top of the showers when we are trying to get clean? And the workers to make us feel stupid for telling them? There are better saunas and spas out there that care about hygiene so please stay away from spa88.

I am honestly shocked and disgusted by my experience at Spa 88. During my visit on 1/19/2026, I personally saw cockroaches, **COCKROACHES — PLURAL**, which I documented with several photos and videos (attached to this review). When I brought this to the attention of the front desk attendant — who said her name was Tania (whether that was her real name or not, I have no idea) — her reaction was beyond disturbing. I showed her the footage expecting alarm, concern, or at the very least an apology paired with action. Instead, she shrugged and said verbatim "oh sorry you saw that." That was it. No urgency. No shock. No attempt to investigate, clean, or even pretend this was unacceptable. I asked her directly if this didn’t surprise her — if this happens all the time — and again, just a shrug. No "this is not okay," no concern for customer safety or hygiene. Nothing. I felt dirty and disgusted just walking out of there. This isn’t a minor issue or a one-off inconvenience — this is a cleanliness and health problem. And the staff’s reaction made it clear this is not taken seriously at all. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of saunas, banyas, and spas across NYC at every price point. If you care about your wellbeing, hygiene, or even basic sanitation, stay far away from Spa 88. You have plenty of better, cleaner options. Choose one of them.

This place is such a trip lol. Came here for a friend's birthday last month and felt like I'd stepped into a portal to another world. It kind of has a cruise ship vibe in the sense that it's a multi level space where everyone is walking around wrapped in towels, and there's a bunch of random activity rooms like a VIP lounge, pool table, restaurant, and indoor smoking room? Absurdity of all that aside, the amenities are great. There are multiple steam rooms, a cold plunge, several pools, plenty of saunas. The lockers were also nicer/better stocked than I expected based on other reviews. I will be bringing everyone I know to this place.

Extremely low frills experience for moderate thrill prices. If this were like $40 I’d deal. But it’s $65 on a weekend, which just feels being played. Yes it feels like a slice of old New York and yes it’s a novelty, but unlike other banyas in the city, this place feels actively kind of gross, and I say that as someone with a high tolerance. The vibe was sort of like a janitorial closet slash dilapidated rec center: plastic buckets of dirty water and random equipment sitting around, dirty walls and tiles, crumbling fixtures. Felt like it hadn’t been properly deep cleaned in decades. And it was comically low on amenities. The only place for free water is the bathroom sink, every towel must be requested from a grudging attendant rather than freely available, and forget about conditioner and shampoo—the showers just had clear hand soap. One star for the novelty, and one star for the food, which was pretty good. Otherwise if you want the old school charm, go to the much-cleaner banya in the East Village. If you want luxury, go to Bathhouse in WBurg or Flatiron. This place costs the same and gives way less.

It’s not clean. It’s not luxury. It doesn’t smell great- bathrooms smelled like BO and Poop. The woman who works at the restaurant is incredibly rude…….BUT and this is a big BUT… the sauna itself is incredible, the rooms are ridiculously hot, and the food is amazing. Cold plunge will make you go numb, and the jacuzzi will massage the hell out of you. 100/10 meal at their restaurant. I do wish it smelled better though- minus one star for that.

This spa knows what it’s about. Very simple and gets the job done every time. It’s a casual spot where you can easily spend the whole day with your friends cycling through the pools and saunas. The solyanka is amazing. Also try the dry fish jerky with some beer. This place has no conceits

My experience visiting this bathhouse was very disappointing. The level of service and staff attitude left a negative impression. When I asked for drinking water, I was told I could drink tap water or take a plastic cup. In my opinion, the staff could be more friendly and treat customers with respect, as guests pay for the service and expect a quality and relaxing experience. The quality of the steam rooms was also unsatisfactory. One steam room was almost impossible to stay in due to uncomfortable conditions, while another had almost no heat at all. In my opinion, the facility appears outdated and in need of renovation. I also had concerns about cleanliness, as there were unpleasant odors of old wood. What concerned me most was the apparent lack of safety measures. My wife slipped and fell on the stairs from the second floor. After the incident, the staff only provided a bottle of water and did not show appropriate attention to the situation. When I tried to raise concerns about safety with the staff, I was told at the front desk that there was nothing they could do. This is solely my personal opinion and experience. I hope management will take steps to improve service quality, safety, and facility conditions.
