I enjoy visiting independently owned gyms while traveling so I stopped by while in the area visiting family. The gym is very clean and well maintained. It has a good variety and balance of equipment and free weights. There is a turf area for functional training as well as a dedicated section with squat racks. The staff was friendly and provided me a tour of the facility prior to my workout. My only minor complaints are: 1) a large area of the gym is off limits and is exclusively reserved for personal trainers - this area also includes some interesting machines like the pendulum squat machine 2) the price of a day pass felt a bit steep at $25 - I believe something in the $15-$20 range would be more appropriate 3) I could not find any water fountains out on the floor - they had the bottle fill-up stations, but no fountain to drink from if you didn’t have a bottle (maybe I missed it though)
This is a great gym with a surprising amount of space. I love the dedicated squat / deadlift room and the turf room upstairs for functional movements. Lots of free and cable weights, too. Equipment is clean and well maintained. Staff is friendly and helpful. Price is fair. I really can't think of any complaints.
It’s a spacious area with extremely friendly, helpful staff. All equipment is clean and usually the place is not too busy. I especially love how knowledgeable the personal training staff is. I felt welcomed and encouraged as an absolute novice. They know a great deal about programming and can adjust the workouts to accommodate every individual’s goals. I’ve seen them work with absolute novices and also some of the biggest dudes I’ve seen. Really impressive stuff!
The trainers and employees at X Shadyside are some of the kindest and hardworking people I've met! The trainers always want what's best for you, allow you to set your own goals and limits, and foster a great gym environment. Their free consultations are fairly comprehensive and informative, as they also offer a body scan during it (and go over the results with you). I definitely recommend (consistently) doing the group or private sessions, as I've noticed improvements in my day-to-day life from the weight training they offer. I've been doing twice a week sessions for about 1.5 months now and it's paying off. They tailor their exercise programs to your goals and needs and take into account any limitations you may have. They focus on proper range of motion and your form, rather than piling on more and more weight (and, therefore, risking an injury). The trainers also do a great job at balancing their attention between all the people in group sessions. While their prices may seem a bit steep, I believe it's worth it for the trainers' expertise, the atmosphere, and real progress you can make here. The trainers know what they're doing and are more than willing to help you be comfortable and confident in what you're doing.
The energy at Shadyside X is warm, welcoming, and genuinely uplifting. It’s rare to walk into a gym where the staff is truly invested in your personal goals, but that’s exactly what you get here. Shout out CJ and Izzy! From the front desk to trainers, the entire environment is positive, clean, and full of great vibes. It’s the kind of place that motivates you to show up and put in the work. I can’t recommend it enough!
X has everything you need for an independent workout! Two floors, lots of equipment and accessories including many squat racks (even a semi private squat room!) It is relatively bare bones, some of the equipment is on the older side but it gets the job done. From what I can tell they do not have group fitness classes, sauna, or steam room. It was a bit strange to me that 1/3 of the gym is restricted to personal training. I could not find a Bulgarian split squat stand or hip thrust machine but perhaps they exist somewhere. The staff (Grace) was helpful and kind. Guest pricing is reasonable: $50 for a one week guest pass, or $20 for day pass. It sounds like the membership options are also reasonably priced ($55-$85/month plus initiation fees) and are month to month. I am pleased with my experience here and definitely recommend!
Awesome gym! Clean, well-equipped, and full of good energy. The staff and members make it a great place to work out.
