I loved my experience at the Curwen House while I visited Salem. Check in/out was seamless. I'm so appreciative that they were able to hold my baggage for me to run around town before my flight after check-out. Breakfast was very nice (and complimentary)with wonderful staff there and all together at the hotel. Plus, they graciously accommodated my dietary needs being gluten intolerant. Location is great and I thought the antique interior is cozy. Everything was great! If I visit again I'm absolutely using Curwen House/Salem Inn again.
I booked my stay for 2 nights in the second week of September. This is in a great location, within walking distance of all Salem's major attractions. That is probably the best part about it. The food was not notable but not bad. The rooms themselves were dated but mostly in good condition and clean. The staff were nice and check-in/check-out was simple and straightforward. The mattress left something to be desired. I think what you're really paying for here is location. I think the price was pretty high for the low quality mattress and tattered canopy we got. I'm glad I got the experience of staying in a New England bed and breakfast, but if I came back I would probably choose a more affordable option that still had a good location.
I loved how close the hotel is to everything! My room at the Curwen House was adorable and quiet. The complementary sherry was amazing. The staff at both the front desk and the kitchen were very kind. Breakfast did have a vegan option for me (oatmeal and fruit) which is always appreciated. I’d recommend for anyone to stay here!
I cannot say enough good things about my stay at Salem Inn’s Curwen House! Check-in was super easy and instructions were very clear. I also really appreciated the text reminders and ability to reserve my breakfast table easily. The room was spacious and the bed was super comfortable. The heater in the bathroom was a major plus. The location can’t be beat; close enough to everything but just outside the noisy areas. Breakfast was great: staff were very friendly and were hustling the whole time. The water refill station, ice machine, and microwave tucked in the alcove on the first floor were good little bonuses. I’ll be back!
Don’t come in the winter, nice location cute room, beware you may be carrying your luggage up 2 flights of steep stairs, room is cold! Kind of expensive to be sitting in a winter coat inside the room. Updated a star, they brought us a heater for the room and it took a couple of hours to warm. The stairs are still evil.
Rooms are nice enough, others have complained about noise of others, unless they are in the halls you dont really hear anyone. The beds are ULTRA high, so if youre old - dont even try without a running start. They are also mega soft, so hard bed lovers beware. The bathroom is OK outside the biggest negative I can give which is the toilet paper. Bring your own, this stuff is thinner than anything I've seen. It's as though the went to buy it at the dollar store and said...nah thats too expensive. Awful for how much you spend on a room here, people deserve good tp when they go to an inn. They dont refill the coffee bar items either. Day 1 of 3 I had coffee, not enough creamer for a second cup. They never refilled it my entire stay. I should not have to ask, it should be an item that just happens. Finally the last negative is breakfast. Let me start this with the staff. Because they were not the issue - at all. They are wonderful, nice and overly cheerful- all great aspects. The food...the food is awful. Omelets are made in a pancake machine from a holiday inn - not joking - this is how they are made. They are drier than the Sahara and tasteless. The oatmeal is somehow worse, tastes like a packet of Quaker oats. The quiche is the only mildy edible item, but still not great. I expect more visiting an inn. Cape cod inns would throw this in the trash. We also felt terrible after each breakfast.
This was our first ever trip to salem. We wanted a room that wasn't in a giant hotel, and very close to the activities of Salem. Thats exactly what we got. So I'll list the positives first. Positives: -very close to the heart of salem, easy to walk to everything. -salem inn offers a free continental breakfast, if you reserve it the night before. -historical home converted into a small inn, right on Essex Street. -you can see ropes mansion (Allison's house from hocus Pocus) from the front door. -we had a suite room. It had a large jacuzzi tub, electric fireplace and our own exit to the back of the inn. Negatives: -the bed sucked. It was a queen. It sat high off of the floor. The mattress in our room was hard. The pillows were terrible, no support for your neck. -toilet paper is super thin. -we requested room service, and all they did was make the bed, and change out the towels and wash rags. No toilet paper given, the coffee supplies not restocked. We had to go to CVS to get our own toilet paper. -there is a glow around the door to the hallway. We couldn't block the light, the house is old so the door isn't a tight fit. -our back porch door seemed loose. -every step you make in the house can be heard. The floors are noisy, and we had people staying around us that walked around all night. -the tv is small and hard to see, we have lasik and had 20/20 vision. if you have bad vision, you'll have to pull a chair up to it. -water is yellow -the free breakfast is just meh. Best thing about it, it's free. The staff at the Salem Inn was friendly, but the options are super limited. A waffle or omelet, coffee and juices, toast, etc. If you want good food, go to reds. Did we enjoy our stay? The first night or two, yes. After that, no. Will we stay here again? No. There's 2 very nice hotels on the opposite side of Essex with updated ammendities we will check out next time. All in all, it was an experience. We came for salem, we had fun in salem. This was just a super old room to sleep in before we could go back out and explore.
