Historic Victorian Inn

Beautiful! Who wants to stay in a motel, when you can stay here?! Love the ambiance of the 1800's yet comfy and peaceful. It's right next to the Pettigrew House/Museum; (a Must-See)! And is amongst the Cathedral Historic District; drive around and look at all the beautiful Houses! Close to downtown Sioux Falls with more historic buildings, fun shops, and restaurants. The price is comparable and reasonable. My husband and I had fun!

I'm very glad I stayed at this unique, charming property. It's more comfortable and more beautiful than any mainstream hotel, and the owner is kind, helpful, and responsive. The location is perfect - easy walking distance to downtown, surrounded by other beautiful homes from the same period. I will definitely stay again if I ever pass back through Sioux Falls.

⭐☆☆☆☆ Warning: External payment demand and access denied I booked the Wine Suite – Historic Victorian Inn through Booking.com and paid the full amount in advance. Shortly after booking, I received a separate email from the property owner demanding a security deposit via an external website — including an ID upload and full credit card entry. Access to the rental was explicitly denied until this deposit was paid through that questionable site. My credit card company flagged the transaction as a potential phishing attempt and thankfully blocked it. Despite that, the host insisted on this external payment and initially refused to refund my booking, even though I was denied access to the property. Only after multiple calls with Booking.com was the reservation eventually cancelled by the host, and I received a refund. However, we were left to find alternative accommodation last-minute. I have no objection to a reasonable deposit — but always read the fine print carefully. You never know when a host might try to withhold part of it after the fact. You don’t know the person, and you have no recourse outside the platform. Bottom line: never agree to private payment arrangements outside Booking.com. Always handle everything through the official platform.

The "hotel" works with door codes, but when the code does not work there is nobody to contact, the support-numbers are for wifi-service, booking agency and are voice-mail only... [Update] in the mean time the owner reacted to this review, and apologized in person. Which was very pleasant. However what the owner doesn't seem to get is that when operating an 'hotel' or 'b&b', one has to provide professional hospitality. Make sure your paying customer can reach you, by having an emergency phone number available, including a backup, in case you are not reachable. It took us, together with another couple of guests 45 minutes before we could enter our room. While at the same time we where looking for alternative lodging. Not the pleasant welcome, one would expect for a venue that competes with medium/high-end hotels, at least price-wise.

Exquisite home!!! Beautifully decorated! Will stay again if in the area. Maybe fewer text messages regarding check out rules, but I get that some people require that. So Beautiful!! Thank you for making this available to the public to enjoy in this fashion.

Well reviewed and well deserved! If you're looking to stay in Sioux Falls - especially close to downtown.... why sell yourself short and stay at a hotel? Better than home and just as good if not better! Full amenities kitchen. Super comfortable patio area. Customer service thru text/email was super efficient and seamless. Called once and spoke on the phone - all questions answered then and there. Delivered as promised. Clean, comfortable, convenient. Who could ask for more?

So I try to keep my critiques as objective as possible, and I'll break this up into positives and negetives. I'll start with the positives. Positives - The house is beautiful inside and out and tries to reflect its age in every way possible. It has what appears to be beautiful antique furniture. The proprietor really draws out the character of the house without drawing too much attention to the modern day amenities. Even the props utilized add character and which is what separates a pretty house from a beautiful one. It was a pleasure walking through the house. The proprietor was tolerate of my lack of understanding how things worked (the locks) and was responsive when I did state the room was very warm. I think he even would have been onsite (maybe he was) had I arrived at the time I stated. We had decided on a different movie, which delayed supper and our arrival. The house was like staying in a beautiful museum. We goofed and accidently left our coffee mugs in the room when they should have been washed in the kitchen. I apologized to the proprietor he said it was fine. From a service and look of the place; it was a nice place to stay. Negetives - I'm a little concerned about the required deposit; it was quite a bit. I understand they have to protect their property but some of the lengths are taken pretty far. I've rarely had to provide the details of the guests that were staying with me (and the proprietor actually contacted them which kind of upsets me). The documents you have to sign seem a bit heavy handed. Whatever, they have to protect the property and any associated liability I get it. I just don't care for a place of business requiring the contact information of a guest that's staying with me. I'm was the signatory not my guest. I am responsible for my guest. Anyways moving on, the girlfriend is a native of Sioux Falls area and this house is in downtown Sioux Falls. Downtown Sioux Falls is apparently a rough area of town (maybe that's the reason for all the requirements and red tape?) I didn't know that this was a bad part of Sioux Falls at the time of booking. I did park on the street out front which probably was inviting trouble. There were no other cars on the street nor in the adjacent parking lot at the time I pulled up. They do say in the instructions that parking is available in the back, but it was a bit difficult to discern which driveway was for which house when driving through the alley at night. That's why I parked out front, and my car was still in front of the house in perfect shape when I came out the following morning (so possibly her overreaction?). The house numbers weren't lit and every house seemed to have their outside lights on. Which really made it difficult to identify the house. I had to pull up a picture of the house to confirm the right house; my gps was not enough. This is not the place to come if you want to a good night sleep or consecutive good nights' sleep (see room section). From a novel approach I would consider staying just to say I slept in a beautiful Victorian house, but I wouldn't repeat it. Once you get passed the red tape they do give you free reign to what you want within reason, and are easy to work with. The place looked nice and the service was good. However, with all that said, the main focus of an overnight stay is to have a decent night's sleep. The functional portion of the bed did not meet that standard (especially with the amount of money needed upfront). Sleep is a critical focus of an overnight stay and that's why this is a negetive review.
