American Guest House

An extremely disappointing experience. The place is old and in disrepair. The toilet kept running after flushing and while I got it to stop in the evening, it kept going in the morning. You are forced to pay for breakfast even though it only starts at 830 - early morning travelers are promised a banana and muffin but they were nowhere to be found. Check in starts at 4 pm - late compared to other hotels in the area - and they nickle and dime you if you want to check in early.

The American Guest House was conveniently located near downtown DC in the Adams Morgan neighborhood and about a 10 minutes walk from Dupont Circle with the metro accessible there. As clearly outlined on the website, there is no designated parking, but since we traveled on a weekend, the street parking was available free of charge and was very easy to come by. We were not greeted by anyone when we arrived and did not see anyone during our stay until leaving in the morning, though there was a cell phone number provided in case we needed to be in touch; there was a large desk in the inn though that made us think there usually is someone around. It is quite an old home, and it felt very stuffy. The decor lends itself to contributing to the stuffiness, as it leans into the old timey-ness. This is true for the common spaces, which are small and not really somewhere to hang out in, and the rooms. For the price we paid, I was a bit disappointed with the aesthetic and the stuffy and dusty feeling I had throughout. I will say that it was exceptionally quiet, which is amazing considering the downtown location. While our stay was fine, we are not itching to come back.

If you are looking for a charming, quiet, and cozy Bed & Breakfast near Embassy Row, look no further. Very comfortable beds, very friendly and helpful staff, and delicious breakfast, all for an incredible value.

This was an amazing concierge type of experience: central location, friendly home environment, with privacy as needed. The host was amazing and had a wealth of information. Easy access to Metro as well. The breakfast was great that really helped kick off the day. I am so happy I found this place and will be definitely staying here in the future. You guys did a great job and I will be seeing you soon. Sincere gratitude for having me as your guest.

On the positive side the location is convenient. There is not much to love and I do not recommend at all. The hospitality is non-existent; including a simple greeting of the day. There is no water for sale or otherwise - so after a long travel day you get to your room and then have to walk to Walgreens just to get water. If they can sell candy at the entrance of the place why not water. For those with allergies - avoid at all cost. The common area and rooms smell like there has been no fresh air since the civil war. It has an old musty smell like you would expect when you open a summer home after the winter. They would be served to buy some room air purifiers. I felt tolerated and not welcomed. The breakfast includes scramble eggs bacon store bought day old breads - marginal at best. The experience can be summed up as shelter - period.

My girlfriend and I stayed here to celebrate our 1 year. Our room was on the top floor, and the walk up to the room felt like a museum. Each floor had really cool portraits of different presidents. The room itself felt very cozy, and the romance package with champagne and fruit really set the mood. Lucia is a great host. Along with cooking us breakfast, there are many other treats like muffins, banana bread, bowls of fruit, yogurt etc. for one to enjoy. Would definitely recommend American Guest House to friends and family, and would consider staying here again.

Stayed from Tuesday to Friday and LOVED it! Because it's a b&b, they have special instructions for arriving late (past 9). My flight was already going to get in later and then was delayed an hour. I was worried about being able to get to the room ok, but it was SO easy. Great communication from AGH. I was in for a conference that served breakfast the first two days, but I went downstairs for the breakfast on the third day and it was wonderful. Eggs, veggies, quinoa, etc along with muffins and croissants. The building was dead quiet at night. I was on the 4th floor, so no one was above me. Someone was next door, but I never heard them. My room overlooked the street which was not a problem at all. Based on another review I read, I brought ear plugs and didn't need them at all. My flight wasn't until 9PM Friday and they let me keep my luggage in the front parlor area which I'm so grateful for because I wouldn't have had any idea what to do with it. As a single woman traveling alone, I not only felt safe, but somehow felt like staying with distant family. Also, if you love historic, vintage properties, this is heaven. On my next trip to DC, I will definitely stay here again! Thank you, AGH!
