Positive: The pet policy (no breed/weight limits, no deposit) brought us in to the Kimpton brand, but it's also an amazing stay. The beds are supremely comfortable, the rooms are quiet, and the staff attentive. This location has a free parking garage nearby, too. Negative: Took me a few stays before I discovered the game room - if you have kids, or you're a kid at heart, check it out. There are two bowling lanes (if you're a spinner, know they're not oiled), a half basketball court, pool table, shuffleboard, and more.
Overall, I found my experience to be very positive, as the rooms were spacious, the staff was friendly, and the breakfast was great. This hotel offered everything needed for a business trip.||Took one star off because of the quality of the bedding and the bathrobe provided. They felt noticeably substandard and seemed out of place in an otherwise high-quality hotel environment.
My fiancée and I are getting married in downtown Winston-Salem this year and wanted to stay at the Kimpton Cardinal Hotel for our wedding night. We literally live one block away and only needed one night. Because our wedding falls during High Point Furniture Market, they told us we must book a four-night minimum stay just to stay one night. When we first called, they told us to call back in February because the policy might change. We waited and called again in March… and were told the exact same thing. To make things worse, when we tried explaining the situation, the employee hung up on us. It’s disappointing that a hotel in the heart of Winston-Salem won’t accommodate something as simple as a local couple trying to book one night for their wedding. During High Point Market it’s clear the priority is maximizing revenue, not hospitality. Very disappointing experience. Future couples should be aware.
This hotel is amazing! Perfect blend of architectural history with modern ambiance and elegance! So cool inside, great staff, massive bathroom suite-amazing amenities and the basement - wow! Have never quite seen another hotel like this. You could never leave and have a great time/ but it is very convenient to all things downtown W-S. Complimentary social hour with vinyls is icing on the cake! Super cool place will definitely be back 🤩
We had our wedding lunch and stayed at the Kimpton Cardinal, and everything was wonderful from start to finish. The staff were so adaptable and genuinely wanted to meet us where we were with our plans. It’s such a cool, historic building if you’re looking for a space with character and charm. They offered so many great options for how to host our lunch — we ended up choosing the 20th floor, which was perfect. Every staff member we interacted with, from Kelsey during the planning to everyone we met during our stay, was amazing. Highly recommend!
I would not stay at this hotel again. The rooms were okay/clean, but the water in the hotel never got hot. Luke warm showers! The elevators all rattle like they are about to break and you are going to plunge to your death. I picked this because the game room looked fun but it was relatively small compared to the pictures and there was no availability. Other have noted it is frequently broken—so don’t get sucked in. The biggest issue is that their food service is not efficient/properly integrated. Their site boasts about the Katherine, but they don’t tell you that hotel guests are not given any priority and that it is a separate entity. We were not able to get a table, but thankfully were able to eat in the bar as we got there relatively early. Others were not as lucky. They offer the ability to pre-order room service the night before, which we did, and scheduled it for an 8:15 delivery window. It arrived an hour later and was missing the coffee, fruit and waffle syrup that was supposed to come with the breakfast. We needed to leave by 9:25 so 10 min. was not enough to really eat. The delivery person said "you can get coffee in the lobby." (It was supposed to be part of the continental breakfast I ordered!") The food manager assured me she would remove it from my bill. They charged me for it anyway. I had to call to obtain my folio—it wasn’t sent automatically, and that’s how I discovered I was charged. When I called back, the buck was passed between the front desk and the restaurant and I still haven’t heard from a manager at either. Front desk staff are rude/not helpful. Hopefully this will get rectified without me having to disputed it with my credit card, but at the end of the day, very disappointing service and an unexpected experience at a Kimpton. I’ve stayed at many other Kimptons over the years. This hotel is not up to the brand. Buyer beware: Note that most of the good reviews of this hotel are written by "local guides." Look at the real customers who received no compensation to post reviews and you’ll have a more true picture of this hotel. Definitely NOT worth what they are charging per night.
This was my second time staying at the Kimpton Cardinal. Last time was for work, this time was with family for a quick weekend visit to the area. Both visits were outstanding. The building is the old RJ Reynolds corporate office. It has an amazing art deco vibe and turns out it was the precursor to the Empire State Building. You can definitely sense it. The lobby has a large sitting area where they had a wine social from 5-6pm. The other side of the first floor has a bar and restaurant. The food at dinner and breakfast was excellent, and the service was top notch. Taylor, Kristina, Gregory and everyone else was really attentive and friendly. The menu was a bit more fancy than my preference, but I enjoyed an arugula salad at dinner and a veggie quiche for breakfast. My family got a 1 bedroom suite. There was a nice desk, closet/wardrobe, couch (foldout), coffee table, side chair and TV. Plenty of space for some socializing. There were tons of snacks and drinks, alcoholic and non, in the fridge for an extra charge. I did not try anything. The bedroom was huge. I think it may have been a king bed. The bathroom was huge too, though no place to hang a towel by the shower. Which by the way had a full bathtub IN the walk-in shower. That was odd. There was also one of those sliding doors, not a regular door, which are terrible and give no privacy, but overall the room was amazing. It was so clean too. The furniture and sheets were like new. Big thanks to the kind and helpful staff everywhere. Alyssa and Lydia at the front desk were really great, helping us with changing our credit card, applying our welcome amenity drink credit, and helping with restaurant reservations. I would definitely stay here again but the location in Winston-Salem just doesn't offer much of anything outside of the property itself.
