I didn’t expect a hotel stay to change the way I experience a city — but this one absolutely did. From my window, I could see Powell’s Books — and somehow that view perfectly captures what staying here feels like: creative, independent, and full of character. The location in Portland truly doesn’t get better than this. You’re in the center of everything, yet it still feels personal and authentic. The room itself completely breaks the mold of a typical hotel. It leans into an industrial aesthetic, but not in a cold or corporate way. There’s no generic, cookie-cutter design here. Instead, it feels curated and lived-in — like you’re staying at the beautifully styled home of an artist friend. It’s thoughtful, inspiring, and refreshingly not boring. The front desk team was equally impressive. Every request was met with warmth and efficiency. They were attentive without being intrusive, and genuinely helpful throughout my stay. This is not just a place to sleep — it’s part of the experience of being in the city. I will absolutely stay here again next time I visit.
I routinely stay at the Clyde when visiting Portland, and part of the reason I find myself returning again and again is because of the combination of Bohemian, bunker design, exceptionally helpful and friendly staff, and generally good vibes for writing. It is such a welcome environment, uncluttered and conducive to deep concentration, repeat with everything you need for a comfortable stay. Plus, it is conveniently located near so many things you would want to walk to in downtown Portland. Excellent restaurants, the fantastic art museum, and it’s just one block over from Palace city of Books, one of the most iconic bookstores in the world. Really the ideal stay.
We chose a large and comfortable room with a our own bath that was newly remodeled on the 4th floor. (There are rooms that share a common bathroom at a lower cost.) The coffee shop, that's accessed through the main lobby, is open from 6-7 daily. Great food, coffee, that even has a limited bar menu. The Clyde is pet friendly for an additional fee. Public transportation (MET) trollies, trains and buses can get you nearly anywhere in the Portland Metro area including the airport. There is no off street parking and street parking outside the hotel is limited to 15 minutes. However, there are plenty of reasonably priced parking garages within a 5 minute walk. The Clyde is an older hotel that was purchased and remodeled by the Kasa Group with modern amenities without losing it's original craftsmanship architectural charm. It's a warm and comfortable hotel that's affordable, and conviently located for a great weekend getaway.
This hotel totally captures the spirit of Portland. It' s creative, laid back, and has a cool mix of old school and hipster vibes. My room had turntables and local art on the walls. The cafè downstairs, Stumptown Coffee, made every morning perfect. The staff treated everyone like locals, full of suggestions for unique shops and bars. It s not luxury, but it has so much character that you don' t miss it. I met other travelers in the lobby and ended up exploring the city with them. Feels like a home for creative souls.
The Clyde is such a gem!! The location is ideal for walking and taking in much of Portland's downtown. It's just up the street from Powell's and the Pearl, with lots of fantastic restaurants, bars and shops within walking distance. With quick and easy access to public transit, it was a great connection point for getting anywhere in the city. You can tell immediately that the Clyde is rich with history. They've done a great job highlighting the architectural details and it feels super unique and very Portland. As an interior designer, I immediately fell in love with the lobby; with its high ceilings, happy plants and vintage, hip vibes, it feels effortlessly cool. And the mezzanine area was a fun bonus! Equally great for getting some work done or gathering for game nights, it's a super unique feature. The staff was very helpful, the coffee shop next door was great (with a surprisingly good vegetarian breakfast burrito) and our rooms were comfy with great views and old-timey, vintage charm. And good water pressure 🙂 I really can't say enough good things!
We had an outstanding time at The Clyde Hotel. Central to everything we had planned for our weekend trip. Loved the room- super comfy bed and pillows, great shower, mini fridge, tea kettle... everything very clean. My favorite thing was the design aesthetic throughout, from the lobby to the room, materials were repurposed in a very utilitarian way that didn't lack for a sense of luxury. I want to commend the designers for excellence. We had no problems from check in to check out; all well thought out and felt more like an Airbnb in the best ways possible. Tokens for coffee and tea at the downstairs shop were much appreciated bonus. Would highly recommend and will definitely book again. Used secure room in lobby to keep our bags so we could check out early and not schlep luggage around town until we got our car back from secure parking. Parked down the block at the Union Bank underground parking. Very secure and simple to navigate. $28 for peace of mind overnight. Well worth it. Overall the hotel offered all we needed and then some. We were very happy with our experience.
Another stellar experience at the Clyde! Good vibes, good music, great atmosphere and fabulous staff. Lars, Ashley .. what can I say? You brought the happy to my birthday, the warmth to my experience. You two made my 60th the best EVER! I will keep this memory. Adam, thank you for going above and beyond to ensure sound quality and a working system. We appreciate you all! The Water Avenue Coffee is darn good too! Try the bean and cheese breakfast burrito with your complimentary coffee!
