CULINARY PSYCHOTIC, CHAPTER IV "The Serpent’s Den and the Starborn Burger" Location: The Sparrow & The Serpent Entry, as recorded by the Cleric In the amber light of sanctuary, where chandeliers tangle with vines and laughter flows like mead, we arrived—dust from the road still in our boots, coin purses lighter than our spirits. Heather, Keeper of the Dice, conjured our fate. Jake, the Philosopher-Knight, bore silent witness. Burgers were not ordered, they were summoned. Swiss and habanero. Bacon jam and jalapeño. Even the foulest of blessings: peanut butter. A tower rose at the bar. Dice clattered like thunder in the realm of the damned. We cheered, we swore oaths, we bit down hard. The tavern itself—a creature of gothic whimsy—breathed with stories. Skeleton dragons curled near velvet curtains. Starfleet portraits watched us drink. The stained glass whispered in ancient Greek. We sang with queens. We blessed the stage. We rolled for flavor and won chaos. We were foolish mortals. We were immortal for a night.
I wanna cry (complimentary) because no one working here has ever made me feel unwelcome or out of place, and I can't say that often. I love everything about this place. I found home here when I attended a goth event, while being new not only to Eugene, but to Oregon. I'd never lived out of my home state before, and I always struggle to feel welcome anywhere. Old Nick's (their name at the time) was that first big spark of joy I found in a new town. The bartender I spoke to was patient with my shyness & awkwardness, and I was served a great burger (so hard to find a good burger these days lol). I love the outdoor patio and that there's a non-smoking area there; it's great for taking a break from the noise and crowds. Like I said, all the staff are wonderful. I've only ever had issues with fellow patrons, but not often. Non-goth events here can be stressful when you usually expect a welcoming atmosphere (why come to a dark-themed pub and be flabbergasted when you see other guests dressed in a dark style??), and every goth woman and femme unfortunately knows that things can get weird and even dangerous when the non-goth crowd finds their way into a goth event... One thing I strongly suggest that would make the place more Disability-friendly is a restriction on fragrances, though. I definitely appreciate the non-smoking area even outdoors, but people who suffer around secondhand smoke often also suffer when folks come in absolutely drowned in vomit-inducing perfume. It turns a nice time into a shitty one so fast.
Love the bartenders, love the decor but I get burned by the shows too often. Today was the third double book, paid extra for good seats and got nose bleeds because I worked late. It's cool the entertners tonight were good sports and combined shows but this isn't always the case. I regularly do not feel an auspicious vibe here.
I’ve never heard of a bar being out of alcohol on a Friday night when they’re completely dead and they’re about to have an event… yet here we are. They’re out of WHISKEY at 845pm on a Friday. Tables without chairs, random stools scattered about, weird smells. Nothing looks clean. I’m wearing a g-string and am genuinely worried about sitting down. There’s only like ten people at three tables and they can’t keep the food orders straight. They’re charging premium drink prices for bottom shelf liquor and charged a $15 cover. I’ve never been so disappointed in a bar in my life. That being said, the staff is friendly…
This place is doing amazing work. Not only for the Eugene community but the LGBTQ community. I was so shy walking in and walked out at the end of the night with a new home. The shows are fantastic and the drag is to die for.
I've been a couple of times now and each time they've been out of several food options and alcohol. There's already a very small selection of alcohol as well. Very limited seating indoors, especially during events. Most of the staff are super nice, except for one guy. Amazing atmosphere for sure. Check it out. Form your own opinion.
Great pub, the night we went there was live entertainment that was borderline excellent, the apple cider was delicious and the employees were awesome. I didn't really pay much more attention than that, I met this amazing girl and we talked for hours. Would absolutely go here again!
