If you’re looking for a breathtaking drive and a stunning slice of Idaho beauty, Lucky Peak State Park is a must-see. We didn’t stay for the day, but even just driving up along the Boise River Scenic Byway was worth it—the views are absolutely incredible. Our first stop was Sandy Point, nestled right at the base of Lucky Peak Dam. It’s a wide, sandy beach with calm water and a peaceful atmosphere—perfect for swimming, picnicking, or paddleboarding. Even from a distance, it’s clear this is a family-friendly destination with large shaded grassy areas and plenty of space to relax. Farther up the road, the Lucky Peak Reservoir opens up into expansive, sparkling water surrounded by rolling hills. We saw people kayaking, jet skiing, swimming, and enjoying the calm summer weather. There are picnic shelters, well-kept restrooms, and even lookout points where you can pull over to take in the spectacular views. The peacefulness of the area combined with the dramatic mountain backdrop creates a one-of-a-kind outdoor setting. Whether you spend the day or just take in the views like we did, this is a 5-star gem that showcases the natural beauty Boise has to offer. Highly recommend it as a scenic drive or a relaxing outdoor destination for all ages.
Been here a few times when my grandbabies come to visit from out of state. The park is always well kept with clean bathrooms, picnic tables and employees around to keep things going. I do like the fact that I can go somewhere without dogs running into our area.
My kids love paddle boarding here. It is shallow throughout so easy for kids to swim too. They love playing under the "rooster tail." There are 2 volleyball nets, bathrooms, picnic tables, a sandy beach, and some fun little water features right at the water. Downsides: Can get crowded especially on weekends, you hear the noise of the traffic on Hwy. 21 driving by, and there can be clumps of algae in the water (See photo).
I haven't spent much time here, just walked through to check it out. Seems super cool. There were some families out swimming and kayaking. Lots of picnic tables around, and a few restrooms. Pretty big beach area. Looks like there is a canoe or kayak rental place too but I didn't look into that.
I am lucky to only live 5 miles from Sandy Point Beach! It is a lovely part of Lucky Peak State Park to get together with your family and/or friends, bbq a meal, and paddle board on calm water. There are nice trees for shade in the grassy areas. Warm sand for the beach experience. Very family friendly. Oh, and if you don’t want anyone to contact you while you are out enjoying yourself, no problem as you probably won’t have cell service. (I really do consider that a bonus!)
Nice swim area for whole family. Water spary serves an entertainment and to keep cool. Be aware, hard bottom kayaks not allowed. The only other thing I noticed was there seemed to be a lot of bird dropping from geese.
Lovely swimming hole and park with sandy beaches and shady grass areas! Ive been coming to this park since I was a child and I have loved it ever since. There are bathrooms and a rental shack for paddleboards and stuff. Picnic tables & bbqs! Even cooler with an Idaho State Parks Pass you don't have to pay to park! I definitely will be back!
