Sunnyside Beach Park is a wonderful spot for a relaxed family day or a small gathering. The volleyball courts on the sand are fun, the kids’ playground is nice and well-kept, and there are plenty of picnic tables and a covered area with a grill — perfect for a BBQ or birthday party. The beach itself is scenic, clean, and offers great views of the water and surroundings. The restroom facilities are good, and there are shady grassy spots so you can spread out. My only caution: parking can fill up on warm weekends, so plan ahead. Overall, a lovely park that’s great for kids, friends, and casual get-togethers.
Sunnyside Beach Park in Steilacoom, Washington—it’s a charming little waterfront gem right on the Puget Sound, located at Chambers Creek Road. This spot offers easy access to a sandy beach (best at low tide for exploring seaweed beds and shells), with stunning views of the water, nearby islands like McNeil (famous for its prison history), distant Olympic Mountains, and even the Tacoma Narrows Bridge on clear days. It’s family-friendly, with grassy play areas, picnic shelters, BBQ grills, a volleyball court, benches for relaxing, and a small playground, perfect for a sunny afternoon picnic, a leisurely walk, or even some beginner scuba diving if you’re into that. Parking is available but costs $5 for non-residents (residents get a free sticker, must go to Steilacoom Public Works office to get it), and you’ll cross some railroad tracks to reach the beach, though it’s all paved and accessible, including for wheelchairs. Water quality is tested regularly, so it’s safe for swimming in summer. If you’re in the area near Pioneer Park, it’s just a short drive east, definitely worth a visit for that peaceful, scenic escape!
Very peaceful spot even though its right off the road and the train comes threw. The views are great. You can also rent kayaks that are there with the proper safety equipment
This is one of the places I go to just "be". Getting myself centered can be difficult but going there and just sitting in the parking lot (I'm somewhat 'mobility impaired ', watching families play trains pass by, ferries to and from McNeil and Vashon Islands, etc, etc, etc is very therapeutic for me.
This place was great. We had a work outing here and used the covered patio area along with a grill and a picnic table. Everything was super clean it was very peaceful other than the occasional train rolling through. We saw a deer going down the road porpoises in the bay, it was just a nice place with a great view of the Olympics on a clear day. They're definitely was a steady breeze, but it helped a lot that the barbecue girls could turn and it helped this light our charcoal. I'm sure this place will get packed in the summer because the parking lot is very small. (Paid parking)
Sunnyside has a 2 playgrounds and swings. There's restrooms available in good condition. There's beach area has lots of rocks, its not very sandy. There is a gazebo. Parking is not the best. There is an area but you have to pay and on 2/15/3023 it was $10 per hour. If you have small kids its worth noting that the train does pass by a lot and there a small area were you have to cross the track to get to the parking lot. So be careful.
Lots of great parking at this location. However, it is $10 to go to this park. There is a place you pay before you go into the park. It's $10 for the entire day no matter how long you decide to stay.
