Sunset Reef Campground

Nice site. We arrived mid day on Saturday during the government shutdown. Only 1 other RV there. A few arrived at dusk. RV spots still available all weekend. Cover and picnic table were very nice.

Quite opulent for a BLM site. Tent pads are flat and use fine stone. A picnic table with a sturdy roof for shade is nice. Trash bins and a pit toilet are available. No water onsite.

Amazing stay here. Stayed for 4 days while exploring Carlsbad & Guadalupe Mountains. Very quiet, albiet some neighbors can be quite loud. Depends on who is with you. Restroom is clean and does not smell bad. Trashcans and shaded picnic tables are provided, as well as grills and stakes for smores. (these are provided). Great view of the sunset & sunrise, with the guadalupe mountains towering in the distance. It was enjoyable watching the storms hammer the Guadalupes while my campsite was dry and warm. Highly recommend seeing any openings for this spot before paying for a campsite elsewhere.

Very clean and well-maintained campground with clean bathrooms. Sites are open and flat with no trees, so be prepared if it’s windy. Some road noise, but generally quiet. Each site has a fire pit, grill, and covered picnic table. Beautiful morning and evening views. Nice tent and camper sites. Pit toilet available. Great base camp for Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mountains National Parks

‘25-11-19 We had a quiet and peaceful night. In hindsight, we parked in the wrong spot. We were first in when all RV spots were full. We should have parked in spot #1 (on photo). Apologies for blocking anyone’s sunset view! 🙏🏼🕊️🕊️

Very nice BLM campground. Quiet and peaceful. Center sites have patios with cover, picnic tables, and fire rings. Camping along the outside edge on the fence line gives you the gorgeous views of the Guadalupe Mountains to the west and the Carlsbad Caverns Visitor Center to the north. Rock-lines fire rings on the outside fence line for campers wanting the view. Garbage cans and a put toilet for those that need it. And it's free with. 5 day maximum stay. Spots all filled up in the evening each week night in mid February.

Sunset Reef is about as basic as you can get for a campground, but it's free, safe and clean. It's a large flat gravel plot, surrounded by a fence in the middle of an open plain. There are 6 tent pads, each with a covered picnic table, and 6 covered picnic tables with pull in parking beside them. If all 12 spaces with covered tables are full, it doesn't mean you couldn't still camp here. The whole space is essentially a big parking lot, and you could set up wherever. It would take a lot of people to fill up this space. There is no water, power, or dumpster, but there is a pit toilet, and it's actually the cleanest pit toilet I've ever seen. There's some road noise from the highway, but the stars are incredible. I felt very safe here camping alone as a woman. In mid-July on a Saturday night, the campground was about 2/3 full mostly with young couples tent camping. As a landing pad to sleep before heading out to adventures, this place is ideal. It's about 20 minutes from Carlsbad Caverns and other hiking. The people here seem comfortable leaving their tents set up while they leave for the day. This however, is not a campground you would want to hang out in during the day. While the picnic tables are covered, there are no trees or natural shade, and it's blisteringly hot during the day. But for a free, safe, clean place to sleep before adventuring, it gets five stars.
