Disappointed! I am a healthcare worker and was required to come in to work and chose to stay here to avoid driving in the snow/getting to work safer since I live farther away. For the price I paid for two nights, my overall experience could have been a lot better. My biggest complaint was the thermostat in my room, during the coldest storm mind you, my room was 58 degrees and no hot air was blowing out. I reached out to the front desk about it and it took hours for the issue to be resolved. I work night shift so this made sleeping during the day nearly impossible. The room itself was very mid, I was all out of body wash on arrival, room service never came during my two night stay and overall there were just cheap toiletries that I feel should have been better for this to be considered a 4-star hotel. The front desk lady when I checked in had a poor demeanor and made me feel not welcome. The only positive I can think of for my stay here was the Italian restaurant downstairs, despite not having complementary breakfast (which again for it being a 4-star hotel, should have been provided) the service there was phenomenal and the ladies that served me were such dolls. They did offer plenty of options throughout the day that were delicious (a bit pricey) but I’ll take it. For the price point and what you get out of it and my service overall, I will not stay here again unfortunately and I recommend spending your money elsewhere.
I stayed here not too long ago with my company and had encountered an issue with my room. I went back downstairs and asked to speak with the manager. I met with Colin who was very sympathetic and understanding. He made some changes and immediately changed the experience, positively. During the process, Colin was very professional and SUPER accommodating! The Great Southern is very lucky to have someone who is very good at hospitality and customer service!! Thanks Colin!!
For context of this review, titanium elite Bonvoy member with over 700+ nights, so been to quite a few hotels on all ends of the spectrum.||Overall experience: 4.7/5||Beautiful lobby, EASY and fast check in, and absolutely friendly staff throughout our stay. Nice classic old world hotel vibe!||BAR/RESTAURANT||The bar and restaurant is lovely. We love a good hotel bar. Prices were as expected for hotel in downtown CMH, and staff were extremely pleasant. Elites get free breakfast for 2. Highly recommend!||STAFF||Front desk checkin was 5/5. Polite, kind and prompt. ||Also want to thank the other front desk staff member who efficiently handled a maintenance issue in room.||I must also specifically thank Director of Operations Nyeema Smith. She was kind enough to accommodate a next level room upgrade - much appreciated!||ROOMS||Thanks to Nyeema, we were fortunate enough to get one of the two presidential suites. 1500 sq ft, 1.5 bathrooms with a large jetted soaking tub in master bath. An amazing room!||We had a huge table, awesome wet bar and a huge living room. ||Because of the unique property, the rooms can and do vary widely in size. The corner suites are also really nice. For convenience, I’ve attached a photo of 4th floor room layouts. ||LOCATION||Great location in southern downtown. Very short walk to columbus commons park, theaters, food and drink as well as close proximity to German Village and Short North.||PARKING||It is admittedly pretty tight and typical downtown prices for parking. I believe valet is $40/nightly. We know the area and opted to do a meter just down street for a few hours (most need to be paid 8 am - 10 pm Monday-Sat) and utilized free Sunday parking. ||MISC||These aren’t complaints, just stuff I’d want to know if I were the GM or a potential guest…||The hotel is historic and appeared only one of two elevator was working - no issue for us. ||The shower is tiny in some rooms (including ours, but we wanted the large tub) and large in others. ||There is also a bit of a musty smell, and don’t expect modern and contemporary furniture or designs. This also means some rooms are kind of dark by "modern" standards.
Stayed at the hotel over the weekend. Lobby is beautiful and charming. Bar is welcoming and offers typical food which was delicious. Our suite although small was a little outdated but accommodating. This is an old historic hotel so I was not expecting a modern spacious room. It could use a little freshening up, though, Housekeeping is in need of a better supervisor. There was no cream rinse, one tiny bottle and I mean tiny bottle of lotion and no refill of coffee cups on day 2 of our stay. All of this I can live with simply because I went to the lobby for assistance. What bothered me was the reaction of the night clerk. Excuse after excuse after excuse and all I wanted to do was inform her of the situation. Not good!
This grand old hotel is in need of updating. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was clean, and the bed was very comfortable. But this hotel had too much that was off to justify its cost. The rooms are small. The decor is dark and not cozy. Don't expect a chair or a desk. Noises from the hallway are audible in the room as if the door's open. The rooms have an unpleasant smell. If you turn the loud AC system off, the room gets noticeably dank and humid. Friends who stayed in other rooms had the same experience (one friend's room lacked a full-length mirror). The hotel lacks amenities you might expect, like a shop. Almost all of this would be perfectly alright if the it wasn't priced like a high-end hotel.
Beautiful lobby, easy check in, friendly staff throughout our stay. Nice classic hotel vibe. ||Smallest (tiny, really) hotel room I have stayed in during the past 200+ hotel stays. Think New York mid-town small … But, really comfortable bed, nice (large) TV, good shower with lots of hot water, and valet parking prompt re car pickup. ||Good location. Lots of great restaurants and sites to see within a mile walk.||Fantastic (included) breakfast!||Note: My son is a Titanium member and I am a Platinum member. No real acknowledgment of our brand loyalty apart from the tiny room.
This hotel is amazing; built in 1897..lots of history and charm. Its uniqueness makes almost every room different. Could the building use a little love.. yes, but it doesnt take away from its charm.
