It was a good place to stay. Rooms were decent and comfy. We were given the wrong room at night and changed the next day. There should be more administrative staff for late night check in. That room had lots of ants but the one we were supposed to stay in was clean. The pool and the mansion with its history made it a nice place to stay. Owner was also friendly. Breakfast could have been improved. It was just cereal and pancakes everyday and if we were slightly late, it would be all finished. Some days were bacon/sausage but for those who don't eat it, there weren't many options. There were also no toiletries in the bathroom. I understand it's hostel and not a hotel, but I had paid for a private room and bathroom which was almost hotel price, so at least some soap would be appreciated. Location was also a bit far from the metro and car is required for late night travel, as it's not the safest area. Overall, it was okay for the price but could have been a little better.
We invited Safari Voices International, Kenya's top musical vocal choir to perform in 4 states on a U.S. tour. The pressure was on to host them in comfort, style and affordability. I choose the Rochester Mansion. It was large enough and the staff was so accommodating. We had a last minute reception and everyone pitched in to help and it was a great success. The rooms were clean, and comfortable. More than a few of the group said they would be more than happy to stay there again. The breakfast was good, served by pleasant staff. They kept their promise! We loved and I'm sure we'll be back soon.
A good place for the money! My boyfriend and I stayed 5 nights. It's in a central location of LA and we felt very relaxed here. The decor was pretty awesome, it was old Victorian style or something. Lots of character. Met the owner, he was a pretty cool dude. If you can, stay in the solarium room, There is a sunroom off to the side which is an awesome place to read a book or take a nap with a good breeze when the windows are open. ||Pros|Free parking |Clean|Friendly service|Affordable |Central location |Decent free breakfast |Pool||Cons|The bed was not that comfortable |no AC |Unorganized staff |Weird vibes of how the place is run??? |
Rochester Mansion is wonderful. The staff are all great. The people that I personally interacted with treated me and my daughter and her friend with the upmost respect. I am handicapped and use a motorized chair and they don't have a lot of areas that are handicap accessible but to accommodate me they changed my reservation from a 4-person room to a two-person room to make it easier on me. Lisa who works in the front office is excellent. She is one of the nicest people I have ever met in my life. I would recommend this place to anybody looking for a place to stay. Also let's not forget the breakfast that they serve every morning. The menu changes everyday. When I come back to LA, this will be the place I stay.
Let me say upfront that there are a great many people who would enjoy their experience in this hostel. I, am not one of them. I had to share a single bathroom with 10 other people. People left their dishes untouched for two days, breakfast was late and I was told to "arrive early so that you make sure you get breakfast". I wasn't presented with a room key because apparently the area is safe and so the front door was left wide open at night. I basically only slept, showered and ate there, so I got what I needed to out of it. People looking to meet others from all over the world will find this place a lot of fun, but for everyone else, STAY AWAY!
We booked a queen room, which comes with a private bathroom. The rooms are tiny but its all you need when you are out all day exploring the city. The room and bathroom were very clean. The bed could of been softer but hey, it was good for a few days. You cannot beat the location. We were able to walk everywhere and the subway is very close. The prices seem to be a lot higher than the last time I stayed there, so I will probably start looking at other establishments. I think the word is out.
This place is strange. Its owned by a guy who also owns other houses on the estate so you could be put in any of the buildings. There are no locks on the doors and no lockers so if I was travelling alone I would feel very vulnerable. When asked at the beginning about lockers we were pretty much laughed at and told that nothing has ever happened before and that all the neighbours knew this was a hostel... You just can't have people sleeping in unlocked houses in a random part of LA. The breakfast was ok and the woman who checked us in was super nice and helpful about information but the place needs an upgrade and certainly wasn't that clean. It's cheap so I wasn't too bothered about that.
