Brown's Island

​Brown Island is a hidden gem right in the middle of the city! It's a cool little island that feels like a true escape. The highlight is definitely the nice long walk you take across the historic bridge. ​That walk alone makes the trip worthwhile, offering incredible scenic views of the river and skyline. It’s perfect for an afternoon stroll or a quick breath of fresh air. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the area!

Brown's Island is one of my favorite Richmond locations for photography sessions. I've shot countless family portraits, graduation photos, engagement sessions, and more here, and it's always beautiful. The cherry blossoms in spring are absolutely stunning and create a gorgeous backdrop for any type of session. The open green spaces, river views, and urban skyline in the background provide great variety all in one location. The island is easily accessible, free to use, and offers plenty of space to work without feeling crowded. Whether you're looking for natural settings with the river or want that downtown Richmond cityscape, Brown's Island delivers both. If you're planning family photos, senior portraits, engagement sessions, or any outdoor photography in Richmond, Brown's Island is an outstanding choice, especially during cherry blossom season. Small park with wide sidewalks and views of canal and train tracks. Parking is limited. The island hosts several special events and concerts. Have been several times and the logistics and capacity has some serious safety issues. There are only portable toilets and the sanitizer and hand wash stations were empty. Food trucks park in the sidewalks, blocking the paths for walking. Extremely long lines for food, drinks, and bathrooms. The lawn is dead flat, so you can't see the stage and multiple sound/light production tents block the view. The overcrowding is dangerous.

One of my favorite venues I've been to in a while. I like that it's on an island so you walk across a bridge to get to it. The space itself is great. They definitely need to raise the stage a little higher so people in the back can still see but you can still make it work. Be ready for port a potty for the restroom. Definitely bring chairs and not a blanket to establish your spot a little better. They do search your chairs and bags when you enter.

Very nice place for some exercise. Great access to downtown.

Close to the Richmond National Battlefield and Tredegar Iron Works, the walk/ bridge to Brown's Island is pretty and gives the history of the area. It's fairly exposed so it's nice when the sun is out, but I can see that it would be not a good time to visit this site. Otherwise the views are nice with as this is on the James River. A good outdoor place to hang out.

Wonderfully done. Beautiful views of the James. Find a nice quiet place to rest and unwind. Enjoy the Canal walk and take advantage of the joy it will bring you!
