Positive: "" Negative: My room had a door to an adjoining room. The door was not equipped with a secure lock. A man entered my room through that door during the night. A security/maintenance person was sent to handle the situation however; I was never contacted by management.
I tried. I really tried. I’ve stayed here 3 times in the last 8 weeks. 2 different suites and then a petite room. The hotel is gorgeous. It’s historic. It’s beautiful. The food is mediocre. The Sunday buffet - so disappointing compared to what it used to be years ago. The staff? Dispassionate. Apathetic. From check-in to check out, I believed they wished they were someplace else. When we brought a problem to the attention of the manager, she promised to call us back and she never did. When our toilet was plugged, it took 2 hours and multiple calls to get maintenance to fix it. The suites were beautiful. The petite? Here’s is a video of the leaky shower that left a solid rust ring in the tub with bubbles in the paint or porcelain. I know it is an old hotel, but one can keep up with repairs. Its location is SUPER convenient to the Riverwalk. But after 3 stays, I’m sad to say, that’s the end. Goodbye Menger.
We decided, at the last moment, to run up to San Antonio for a couple of days. We took advantage of the Menger's "Spontaneity package" and got a nice suite for the night & it included a bottle of champagne, valet parking for the night & a $25 food credit. Our room was a lovely 2 room suite with a patio view. We enjoyed the champagne & valet parking, but due to lack of staffing, we assumed after we waited at the door of the Colonial Room for quite awhile, a waitress told us they would be with us in 10-20 more minutes. We decided it was not worth using our $25 food credit for our breakfast. Bummer since it was part of our package! The hotel itself is like a museum, with all the pictures and artifacts in the lobbies & hallways and the location next to the Alamo cannot be beat!
Room was great, with amazing history. Would loved.to hv purchased a tshirt from gift shop but the close early and open late. History behind the bar at this hotel is pretty cool, but the"bar food" was the only thing available on the dance were there and it was easy microwave food, so that was a bummer. Bar drinks were simple and had read that the margaritas were amazing before landing here. We purchased two, one for each of us. I can say that I've had much better...
I'm 77 years old now. My grandmother stayed there in her younger days. She showed it to us on trips to SA. When I got married I told my wife that is where we were going to stay on our own SA trips. She asked why. When I showed her she fell in love with the older part with all the antique furniture. On one special trip, the lady at the check in desk heard us say it was our anniversary. She motioned to a male worker who came to us and said he would show us to our room. We got to a big door and he said please enjoy your stay. He opened the door and we were in the Presidential Suite. My wife thought I had arranged it, so I kept my mouth shut. Quite a nice surprise. No surprise that is where we stayed for all our SA trips from that point on. Great location, service, amenities, and especially the people. 100% top notch.
The Menger is a old hotel with that classic look and feel going on. Not a bad thing just not for me. The rooms are old but clean and functional, I guess old is not the word I should use. The bar is amazing with lots of history and bartenders know how to make a drink. Delicious breakfast buffet or you can order breakfast with a awesome staff that is very friendly. Quite and great location with the Alamo and mall right outside. I will be back for the breakfast buffet but sleep elsewhere.
For the age and historic stature of the hotel, staff should be nicer and more inviting. This is a beautiful property. Effort would and could elevate it to close to a 4 star experience. Sadly, We experienced bad food and became ill after the meal, spoke to a manager, and never got a call back to resolve the issue. Extremely disappointing. Used to come here as a child it was an adventure. Wish that was more common now. Prior to that experience, I would have given the hotel, a three star, despite the dismal service and the requirement that you book your room online through another company. The decor is amazing. Some of the staff are fun to talk with because they know the history. But overall, I have received better service at Motel 6. You can’t beat the location. It is fantastic. But given the choice, I will choose the Crockett next time and I have stayed at the Menger three times out of the last six weeks traveling to San Antonio. Every two weeks part of this is because I spent my childhood staying at the Menger and wanted to introduce my family to the same experience. If you just want to visit a historic hotel, I would highly recommend this hotel but know that the staff is just there for a job or at least that is how it seems. On our last visit, we actually did get someone that corrected an issue but still did not address our prior visit. Sadly, three times tired of us out. The hotel is beautiful and honestly, it is worth the visit. Just fatiguing if you go back several times and that’s a shame.
