The hotel is probably a nicer 2.5/3 star hotel. The room was a standard king room with tiny balcony facing a house living room. Was a little odd but essentially don’t get a balcony thinking you can have privacy to relax. You won’t. You’ll be facing a homeowner. The woman at reception wasn’t very happy to be there and they offer you "rewards" for booking directly then don’t offer them in person or try to stand behind them. If it’s a "high end" hotel the rewards should be offered at check in. They should be in the room or something not a weird "hi can I have my free thing you offered me for spending $375 on a room for 12 hours." We prepaid for parking but it still was an issue. Kept getting locked in the garage being asked to pay $20 every time we wanted to leave. We also were overcharged for parking based on my reservation. The showers were cold, the ac wasn’t. The elevator was down so it was constantly a wait to get to your floor. Bo designated area for dogs even though they’re pet friendly (or was never told about one.) Just a very lackluster experience for what is branded as a lux hotel.
The location is top-notch as it’s hard to beat the Country Club Plaza. All personnel were friendly. The room seems clean, but went to call the front desk and found the phone sticky. Nice decor, but the room’s furnishings were a bit shopworn. No coffee maker, microwave or pen and paper were in the room. The hair conditioner in the shower was empty. As others have mentioned, there is an odor that at times permeates throughout the facility. The service and food in the bar was good, but the floor in the bar shakes which is very disquieting. I sent the "reservations team" two emails asking for a room on a high floor (the hotel did not appear to be too booked) and never heard back, but did get a room on the third floor with a nice view of the parking ramp entrance. Overall, the hotel may be ok for some, but could be much better for most. I’m not likely to be a repeat customer.
Positive: Convenient location near nice restaurants and clean environment. Easy ingress/egress parking. Friendly staff Negative: Limited dining options and amenities. Outdoor lounge and pool closed.
Let me start by saying the staff is awesome! We were greeted by Tashe, Lakota, and Lake. All of them were so warm, hospitable, and instantly made us feel welcomed. They went above and beyond to make sure we were squared away and even shared great local food recommendations. As a first impression, I felt excited and reassured about choosing The Fontaine. That said, I did not love that the cost of the room didn’t quite match the overall quality or aesthetic. Our usual hotel choice was sold out, and since the price was similar, I expected a comparable experience. The room, however, felt dated. When we entered, there was a (very) strong smell of mothballs that immediately stood out and lasted the entire time. Every time we left and came back, we were greeted with it. The sheets were also old, scratchy, and had small holes in them. In the end, it was the staff that made us feel better about our stay. Their kindness and professionalism really stood out and left a lasting impression. The location is also a plus since it’s very walkable with lots of great spots nearby.
My girls and I had a wonderful night out at The Fontaine. Lake at the front desk was so welcoming and sweet when we arrived in the lobby. Our encounter set the tone for the rest of our stay. All the staff were so friendly and accommodating. The drinks at the bar were top tier and the food was great. I recommend everyone try this place out, whether it be for a staycation or just a fun, elegant night out on the town. We will definitely be back.
This was my first time staying here (business trip). The staff was super friendly and helpful. The room was clean, and the shower was the best. You have to visit the bar! The bar was beautiful (especially at night), staff was awesome and the drinks were tasty (snickerdoodle martini YUM). I wish I had the chance to stay in the summer months so I could have used the pool and outside areas. I would 100% recommend this hotel.
The Fontaine is a solid 4-star hotel, but I would not rate it higher than this. The location is good for going to the nearby Nelson-Atkins museum (0.6 miles away), and the rooftop bar serves good food (not amazing by any means, but solid). The fitness center is pretty small, and it takes two elevators to get to there, with one of these broken on one day, with no stairs available to get there, thus requiring staff to get me there and back via service elevator. Housekeeping was sporadic, giving coffee cups that did not fit the coffeemaker. The beds were comfortable but not super-plush, and the room was pretty small, with no upgrades available. The outdoor pool was closed (due to being too cold), and there is no spa facility. The staff at the front desk were all super-friendly, except a night clerk, who was probably just too tired from an overnight shift. Overall, the experience was somewhat better than your usual Hilton hotel experience, but pretty much in the range of a 4-star experience. I will likely try a different hotel (likely the The Raphael Hotel, Autograph Collection) if and when I return to Kansas city. Sadly, there is no 5-star hotel currently in Kansas City.
