Guava

📍 Gay bars in Portsmouth

4.3

Guava in Portsmouth stands out as a stylish venue blending modern decor with a relaxed ambiance, ideal for gatherings and celebrations. The friendly service and attentive staff create an inviting atmosphere, while a well-curated DJ ensures a pleasant auditory experience without overwhelming conversations. A standout feature is its outdoor smoking area, offering flexibility for patrons.

The establishment excels in its culinary offerings, particularly its brunch and specialties like braised oxtails, praised for their flavor and presentation. While the decor—inspired by a forest theme—adds charm, minor improvements to the restroom facilities could elevate the overall experience. Perfect for small events or casual outings, Guava balances comfort and sophistication.

Went here for a 21st bday party 🎉🥳. Place wàs very nice. Decorative, nice DJ and decent bar (drinks were a bit pricey). They also have an outside section where you can smoke. Bathrooms were clean and service was friendly and polite.

OMG! Everything Chef Ponder prepares from his kitchen is exceptional. My visit today was to celebrate my B-DAY. 🥳 Our brunch quickly turned into a day party for foodies! My guest snapped into a full food orgasm upon their 1st bite of the braised oxtails. GUAVA757, we will be back again. The service and music were perfect...

I will give my review on 3 Things based on my opinion. First, the Restaurant's appearance. Its creative, neat, and clean. The music is not loud to the point where you can't hear the person next to you talk, but it's loud enough to enjoy the music ,have a nice conversation , hear yourself think and everybody wont hear when you talk( unless you talk loud). It also has a Forest theme to it; it has plants on its green vents, all the seats on the wall are green and the floor is a light brown color. Second, the food presentation and taste. I ordered the bowl, you can see what it looks like in the picture I took and also what it is on the menu from the picture I took. The food presentation was nice and simple. It tasted good, not the best in the world but it's worth the price in my opinion. It wasn't too spicy nor too salty, everything was blended really well. Finally, the customer service. The customer service was really great. The employees were nice, clean, and chill. First time there and I didn't have any problem with the employees unlike one of the reviews on this restaurant. Overall this restaurant has great taste in music, pretty good food, the restaurant looks good inside and out, the restaurant is just about vibe. But the restroom is still a work in progress. I would definitely bring a significant other or friends to chill here.

Me and my friend were visiting VA and randomly pick this location to eat at before heading home.. atmosphere was very nice, music was great. When we got there the place wasn’t crowded yet so the owner Trey came over introduced himself wished us a happy bday and gave us a tour.. He told us how’s he is expanding and the lit day parties they have. The food was delicious and the vibe was on point. Our waitress Torie came by to keep checking on us even though the place was starting to get packed.. we didn’t feel rushed it was a whole vibe.. we will definitely visit again when we go back to Portsmouth Va

I enjoyed brunch here on a Sunday. The menu is unique and the food was good. I ordered oxtails and grits with a side of eggs. The flavor of the oxtails was perfect and the grits were smooth and creamy with a bit of cheese. The eggs were like the perfect scrambled eggs you would have a home--not like any restaurant scrambled eggs I've ever seen. Loved the green onion garnish. I also ordered a drink--cannot remember the name but it was the perfect strength, perfect garnish and great flavor. My waitress was giving us her very best service it seemed. She was very helpful and attentive. Many of the staff stopped by our table to check on us. I recognized many of the staff from (the now closed) Bamboo in Norfolk and they were very friendly and attentive as well. The atmosphere is good for brunch. Music is playing (by a DJ) but not too loud for conversation. Decor is nice and the location can be deceiving from the outside but you will not be disappointed once inside. I do think they should consider curtains or covering the backs of the booths near the windows so that it is not seen through the window. Good for small celebrations or groups. Will be returning to try more menu items!

This is my go to spot to grab food. Food is always great and authentic. I haven’t had a problem with any dishes or bad things to say about the food. The service is not too bad, although they are busy at times. Best time to go is usually between 11-4pm and early in the evening. They have a good vibe with their music choices and I always have a good time.

The atmosphere and music was dope. They definitely need to change the menu to regular bar food. They have a Caribbean theme yet the chef is either not from the islands or not an experienced chef. The cabbage was seasoned with an excessive amount of butter. Mac and cheese was not up to par and the Rasta pasta is what did me in. The shrimp was normal seasoned shrimp and there was no jerk sauce in sight. I asked the waitress to bring me a cup of jerk seasoning and she brought out a gravy/grease cup that absolutely had no jerk in it. Not only was my pasta not Rasta, but the 4 other ladies that ordered a different kind of Rasta pasta (chicken, salmon) yielded the same result. It was dry, noodles stuck together and could have passed for a novice cook making noodles and throwing some shrimp on it. If you are looking for authentic Caribbean food, this is not the place. It’s not even close. I’ve had Caribbean food cooked by Americans that tastes better than what I had.
