If you like a cozy, inviting B&B with lovely perks like a honor snack and beverage bar and a home cooked breakfast… jump in a Time Machine and come to the Southmoreland 10 years ago. It’s a shame. It feels corporate and cheap compared to how it was before it was bought out. I live in KC and I used to come a couple times a year for a staycation. It now feels like they provide the least amount of service and convenience that they have to in order to maximize profits. To be fair, it is still clean and comfortable. I think it’s better than a hotel and if I never had the experience before being bought out and "corporatized" I’m not sure I’d feel as disappointed as I do because it is still nice. It’s just a shame that they don’t serve breakfast and have stripped the hospitality down to non-existent. If you need a place to sleep, in a beautiful area, you won’t be disappointed. I just really want my old Southmoreland back.
I chose the Satchel Page room because it was available for a week and also because it doesn’t have a room above or below it. I was very happy with my choice. It was cozy with a comfy bed and lots of pillows. They provide a fan which was needed because temps were in the 90’s. They also provide a sound machine which was helpful. If you are a person who wants to see staff on site or have your bed made everyday then this is not the place for you. If you want private comfort in a lovely historic setting then you will like it here. The area is very walkable and I did not have a car. I didn’t need one.
We were in KC for a quick 24 hour trip to visit the Nelson Atkins. The location was perfect, we were able to walk five minutes to the museum, and it was a very easy drive to the plaza area for dinner as well. Check in was easy, area was quiet, room was clean and comfortable (we stayed in the Mary Atkins - lots of stairs but there won't be anyone passing by you as it's the last room on the top floor) In the best way, it felt more like staying in someone's home than in a hotel. Very affordable and MUCH nicer than what you would get in a chain hotel at the same price point. 10/10 would stay here again.
We have stayed in many air bnbs over the years but did not find this one appealing. There is an odd odor on the main floor. It's hard to describe but an old musty smell is what I would go with. We were on the first floor and unfortunately you could hear everything. All the other foot traffic in the house. The upstairs tenants you could hear every step they took. Bathroom I would say is in need of updating and refreshing. They do mention smaller cars for parking and unfortunately I only have a truck. The street parking is definitely not ideal since it is shared with apartments. Also the heat was set at 74 degrees which definitely makes it a little warm in there. It was a constant on and off with blankets at night to be comfortable.
Stayed in the Clara and Russell Stover room with my husband for our anniversary. The room was great. All the amenities we could have wanted and very clean. We didn't have any issues with noisy neighbors. The only feedback I have is that the bottom of the jacuzzi tub is slippery when showering. It would have been helpful to have a non-slip mat for it and a grab handle for getting in an out. We will definitely be back!
My husband and I truly had the greatest stay. It was an extremely charming and welcoming place to stay! It is clear that a lot of thought was put into this BNB. The beds were comfortable and all common spaces were very welcoming. We hope to find ourselves staying here again soon!
In the Charlie Parker room- Our tv signal was so spotty we were losing connection every five-ten minutes trying to watch a movie; even after turning the heat down to 68° (it was 40-50° and rainy outside in late October), both of us couldn't sleep well because we were so hot and sweaty; "continental breakfast" consisted of a croissant, a single bite of crappy Sams Club granola bar, a single spoonful of warm greek yogurt, and water from an office dispenser. When asked what could be improved upon, my response was, "A bathtub that takes less than a half hour to fill, that doesn't have an overly lengthy spigot cutting the tub space in half." I deeply regret my choice to stay at Southmoreland on the Plaza, and do not recommend to anyone else. I feel like I wasted almost three hundred dollars.
